Almost nobody rides here if it gets down into the 40's. I'm sure it would be fine if I invested in $500 worth of winter weather clothing but I'm too cheap to spend that much on something I'd use 4X per year.

Depends on how you look at it. We don't live in Somerville, we live in Brighton. The neighborhoods we're looking at for buying are primarily Hyde Park, Roslindale and West Roxbury. All definitely on the outskirts, especially West Roxbury and Hyde Park, but still within Boston proper. But yes, we are having to look a little further out than where we currently live. We could afford Jamaica Plain if we decide to get a condo, but we're leaning pretty heavily toward getting a house at this point.

carbon repair all done on my wife bike... new trek seat cap.. just need a little touch up paint where the carbon repair is visible.. seems strong enough now.. beats sending it to calfee for $200 plus and having to strip down the frame.

I decided to join a new team and I am looking at targeting the road races around here with the first one in a bout a month.

This has been a big decision for me after everything that happened last year.

I used to live in Brighton. And my friend moved to Roslindale a couple of years ago. It is kind of out there, but it is nice.

You don't have to spend anywhere near that much for a decent jacket and a pair of tights or two. You could probably do with warmer leg warmers.

yeah, $500 is not necessary until it gets really cold. I've been riding in the 20's the past two days and I'd say the gear I'm wearing is adequate but cost roughly $700. In 40 degrees, I could get away with less than half of that.

it warmed up nicely today, temp hovered around 23 for only about 40 minutes, then back up again.

yes .. It was in a madone 6 on the seat portion.. So I was able to put on layer on the outside and one on inside.. Sanded the outside so the seat cap would fit again .. Di2 internal battery is thin.. So that still fits too.
MY guess is that I overtorqued it .. Had been using a torque wrench too.. And tightening to 5nm.. Spec is 7

The Missus officially announced it so I guess I can. She's buying out her boss and partnering with a long time friend/coworker. Striking out on their own as a CPA firm.

Hey CDR, congrats to the Missus!

And speaking of riding in the cold... just finished a 6 hour ride, 28F when I started, 32F when I finished. I sweated some, on a couple of hills. Never got too cold.

Rear derailleur exploded on today's ride. Wasn't even shifting, just riding along. My wrench told me a few weeks ago that it was near the end of its life but I never expected it to blow up. Its replacement is sitting in a box on my workbench. I was planning to swap it out this weekend. Good timing, I guess.

I don't think I ever spent that much on winter gear. I bought a team LS Jacket, sealskinz gloves, booties, and tights (sale from performance). Fleece lined leg warmers work too (i used to use performance house brand or whatever).

It's pricey if you care about brand a lot, but I was plenty warm on 15-20 degree rides. I used to tape up my helmet for the winter as well.

I'm good with generic running tights over bibs down to 28F (that's my record low for a ride). You can get them at Sports Authority, Big 5, Dick's, etc.
