My wife's assistant got promoted and took over the Eastern seaboard; 5 weeks ago he packed his bags, wife (who's never left SoCal), and kids to Pompano Beach, Florida.
He's aimlessly wandering somewhere north of Tallahassee trying to find a place to stay. The luck he's had the past few weeks has been sitcom worthy.

Sounds like he's never moved with a family before, poor guy. I can't think of a worse way to do that. His company has no support structure out there?

Today I was descending a canyon when some crappy pavement appeared in front of me. I got on the wrong side of a 2" lip and left the pavement and got into the sand. The guy who was following me comes alongside and asks "Are you ok?" "Not yet" was my reply, as I still hadn't got the thing stopped. Anyway, got stopped and got going again without falling. Made for some good laughs later.

I got nudged off the road on the climb today for 15 feet. Was very proud to not flail and crash. Got back on the road and made it right back to the group I was with.

That support structure left the day before he did. They're based out of Atlanta, so he ended up there. Not sure how its going to turn out but that city got hit pretty hard.

Went riding on the local rail trail today just two days out from Matthew with a former pro racer I ride with. It was f'd up, but not as bad as yesterday. Yesterday was more like a bad "cross" circuit.
Anyway I was riding along and I kicked a stick up into my front wheel and it caused it to lock up cold!
Somehow my rider lizard brain kicked right in and I shifted my weight back and quickly came to a controlled stop to the smell of burning rubber.
I only became scared after the fact.

I've barely gotten over my last cold, and I can feel another one coming on. I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm not happy about this. Sore throat, congestion, and hacking cough are not fun.

I watch rally racing clips and it just amazes me how well the cars stick on landing.
Then I watched a local hero rider, happens to be current WC in the downhill. He is so fast. Actually makes me want to try some downhill or something.
*edit Hm. I could get into this.

CDR, you should check out Skills with Phil. https://www.youtube.com/user/ThePhilkmetz
He's got a ton of great videos about downhilling. He also is the guy who recently got a lot of internet attention for buying a Huffy and taking it on a downhill course to see how it would hold up.

Today I was riding my cross bike near Millbrook Mountain and came around a bend practically right on top of a mama bear and two (big) cubs, maybe 20 feet away. One went right, two went left. I waited a minute, then the two who went left came back across the trail to join the other one, except while they were doing that the other one scampered back across the trail the other way, so now there were two on the right and one on the left. The mama went across the trail again and pushed the cub back across with her nose so finally they were all on the same side. Best bear encounter ever.

it's a pretty crazy read. i'll see if i can find it and link to it.
my wife is paralyzed by fear w/r/t bears. grizzlies have also been extending their turf here and we're now in grizzly country.

All the same, during this afternoon's encounter I wasn't about to go anywhere until I was sure all the bears were on the same side of the trail.

I did, yeah, it was all over the social medias. Grizzlies are scary. Our black bears are more like gigantic Newfoundlands. Last summer I came face to face with a bear while crossing the rail trail trestle about 100 feet from my house. He backed off the trestle, went 30 feet up the side of a hill, and sat on a log. We looked at each other until I finally got bored and rode away.
All the same, during this afternoon's encounter I wasn't about to go anywhere until I was sure all the bears were on the same side of the trail.

or, around here there are hunters who might leave to return later for their kill, and it's possible to accidentally stumble upon that and be perceived as a threat.
an angry/scared black bear is still pretty big!
any animal that can eat (and pass) a porcupine is one i don't want to be on the wrong side of!

I didn't know bears ate porcupines. Man, I can't tell you how many porcupines I have seen this year. I saw 3 on one ride last week. Also owls, hawks, and all manner of woodland critters. As I was typing that sentence a barred owl went off outside my window. A DEC friend said the wildlife explosion is because we had a huge acorn yield last year and it's working its way through the whole food chain, often in indirect ways.

Do people still like the simpsons? They had a boston themed episode and was happy to see my alma mater (and the distinctive castle dorm in which I lived one year) featured in one scene.
