No he's mid top 100 ranked university, but that place you live by would let him in with his current grades and test scores (based on the Common Data Set values) if he was wanted as an athlete, while if he was just a student - very low chance.

My daughter, who is/was an academic machine and was at the top of her sport had about every choice she wanted - because of soccer. So I learned from that. I read once (don't want to find source) that Dartmouth accepts 40% of those that score 800 on math SAT. Yet an athlete can afford to turn them down.

I'm trying to provide options. It may backfire, but cycling is a passion/hobby. Daniel is good, but I/we are realistic. He has had no interest (nor do we) in men's NCAA sports. So just checking it out.

Nice ... will you be venturing over to ergforums.net (aka concept2forum)?

Is that going to be on a boat or just erg? His existing VO2 and leg strength should make him a pretty good asset to a team once he learns the movements and gets the back and shoulders beefed up.

@Doge, did you mention somewhere that the mandatory upgrade rule does not apply to juniors? Just looking over the Catskills start list (I'm not racing it, but teammates/friends are). There's a cat 3 junior who has at least 50 upgrade points, probably more like 70.

Yeah it doesn't. I've talked to one of them about it and he's valuing race experience over a quick upgrade; I can't argue with him on that, time is on his side.

Yea - I don't post VO2 as Gary raises eyebrows. This is more anaerobic however. We were cycling friends with Xeno, so been in the back of out minds for a few decades. This is on the water. Screw up - swim. Not sure which club is best NAC, Seabase or San Diego. More history here, but not BF on topic.
Frankly I have no idea how he will do, but now is the time to try. Last year's Cannondale pro Cameron Wurf encouraged this route. Cameron was an Olympic rower turned cyclist. Just something to do.

Good stuff ... I enjoyed the time I tinkered around with rowing. Six minutes of agonizing pain, a bit like the last 3 miles of a TT. I had a good frame for it (6'3" and 200+ at the time), but just never fully dove in.

True. USA cycling rules. The top 10 or so 17-18 juniors are well into the pro level power. The Euro juniors are crazy. People forget the difference between endurance (adults just have more endurance) and power and race craft. It is hard for me to believe any USA Cat 1 adult could win the junior UCI 2.1 races.

Wow - great frame for it. Daniel is too short/light. Limits him to lightweight, or big boat in a "lessor" program. Ivys and Navy have a good lightweight program, but those are not done deals.

My understanding is that if you dive in, you're doing it wrong.

So, day 2 of commuting. I enjoy it, but its definitely not an ideal commute. In the mornings its great. In the evenings, not so much. I have the option of riding 1 mile on a sand covered road with cars going 70 within a few feet or riding through the hood. Today, I went home in the hood. A few blocks from work some gangbanger was punching the driver of a truck as he was trying to take off. I didn't stick around because he had a few buddies standing by, and whatever was happening just seemed like everyday business. I still would probably take that over the busy road...

In our area juniors never upgrade on points, all junior upgrades are "racing committee" decisions. The system seems to work well, they held back some top kids and now they are rocking.

If it were only 6 minutes you'd probably be in the Olympics, no? I like rowing, but am too skinny to be competitive.

lol, he's a nice guy and I can understand why he's taking his time. I think if I was a junior in that situation I would spend a couple of years doing the same thing to learn to keep an edge about me, so when I did upgrade it stayed second nature even through the cat 2 getting dropped growing pains.

I wasn't counting the 15 seconds after the start where the adrenaline is keeping you numb and the 15 seconds before the finish where you're pretty much blacked out for a 6:30 2k. At my weight, I'd thnink like a 5:40 - 5:50 would be needed to make an Olympic boat.

Why on earth would a promoter expect people to pre reg for a race that won't sell out when pre reg is more expensive?

Because you're nice and want to slip him a few extra bucks (actually, those few extra would probably go to bikereg, but it's the thought that counts).

Your commute should make for some interesting stories! You could always do sprints/intervals through the worst neighborhoods and make some Strava segments with funny names. I ride through segments such as "ride for your life" and "rez dog intervals" :-)

Yeah, I thought about that...not the names, but that's a good idea! Its funny, Redlands has about 6 layers of strava segments per block, but when I hit San Bernardino, nada.
