Thanks all. Another break from the hospital, I'll return tomorrow morning. I think he'll come home tomorrow. He's super tired, super exhausted, and I learned a ton of things about his condition/situation.
Basically life is like this: ------> . Everyone goes to the ">" bit, meaning the end. I saw something on Facebook where a parent says to a kid "You're getting older!" and kid responds "I've been getting older since the day I was born." When the end is nearer it's nearer, sometimes it arrives unexpectedly. However, for my dad, it's both closer and further than I thought. It is what it is. Perhaps 100 years ago he'd have been at the ">" bit already. Definitely 200 or 300 years ago he'd have been at ">" a while ago.
A week ago I was starting to steel myself for 2-3 years of caretaking because he seemed indestructible. Now I'm wondering if I bought too many supplies for him. For some things I have months of supplies, not just weeks. I'm also wondering how much effort we should put into getting him some furniture (dresser etc).
At the same time if anyone has been following my Strava, he has been doing ~1.5 mile walks daily, and two walks over 2 miles. He's in excellent physical shape overall (good cardio, no diabetes, not overweight, no real illnesses per se, etc). Crucially, though, his body is forgetting how to swallow.
This is the only place I'm putting out any kind of info, I appreciate the community here.

He does. Us kids have total POA, he has his medical requests done in writing. I am actually carrying the documents around with me. My dad hasn't been able to talk or communicate in maybe 6 years? 7 years? So we've been doing everything, mainly my brother, but with discussion for big things.

Best of luck CDR. Sounds like you've got better planning set up than most, so that's at least hopeful. Sorry to hear though as no matter how much preparation you have, it's hard.

Very true ..... CDR, good luck, I hope things turn for the better.
My father turns 90 in a few months, back in England, and is very alert & with it mentally, but the body just can't keep going very well these days.

I learned how to scrub in today...Gonna be in the OR observing and assisting with some super minor stuff over the next few months.
By assisting I mean things like:
-Hey, pass this tool over
-Hey, use this retractor
-Hey, cut this stitch.
I'm excited.
