he's saying for him.. he still scoots forwards. I am the same way.. I will scoot forward as well even if I moved the saddle forward. You just have to try yourself and see what your body does.

yeah, i still find myself on the nose at times even with my seat as far forward as possible. i dont know if it happens less often though or whether on average i sit more towards the middle, all i know is that im pretty sure if i could move my saddle like a foot forward i'd still find a way to get on the nose. spdntrxi is right though - just try it and see, moving your saddle is a pretty trivial adjustment and easy to revert back if it doesnt work

as for anyone thinking of buying suits, Brooks Brothers is running a sale ($499, plus you can get 15% off with a new credit card and earn 8% cash back on the purchase). still expensive compared to most, but then again we are a group that spend $1k on wheels...

Yeah, but I'll use those wheels 20+ times a year.

I'll wear the suit once, maybe twice, for a few hours at a time.

True enough. I've worn my only "real suit" (as in dull enough to be appropriate for an interview or other solemn occasions) 3-4 times: a phone interview (to psyche myself up), to a friend's wedding, to another wedding, and to my baptism. a good 3+ years elapsed between the second and third wearing.

The latest i bought will all be items that can be worn separately. When the temperature allows, i wear a sport coat at all times. i don't actually need to show up to campus to work these days, but putting on jacket kind of reminds me that conduct myself accordingly. Also, it's a reminder to myself that i most certainly won't be wearing a sport coat if i were still at a laboratory and to be thankful for my current employment.

Being able to dress like a slob is the best part of working in a lab. If I feel the need to get fancy I put on a fresh lab coat.

I wouldn't wear pants.

I'm business casual these days even though I'm in a lab, kind of a bummer. 6 years in grad school all I wore were jeans with free t-shirts I got at conferences.

At my last job, it was not uncommon to see folks wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. I tended to dress a bit more formally - khakis and polo in the spring and summer, jeans and polo/button up in the fall and winter. It's too hot to wear jeans in the spring summer. I'm basically still dressed like that now.

That said, I had a work from home job many years ago, and at one point, my wife was working out of the country for three weeks. I didn't shower or get dressed most mornings. I think I did laundry once the entire time she was gone.

My last office job I showed up first day wearing nice shoes, a button up, and a vest. The CTO walks into the programming cave like 20 minutes after I sit down wearing shorts and flip flops, to ask someone a queston and spots me sitting there and says something along the lines of "First day? I remember when I used to dress like that..."

Where I used to work was like that, created and maintained a super fast messaging system. The office was extremely casual. Anyone in a suit who wasn't being accompanied by one of the two partners we'd look at them and ask, "Interview?"

One of those two partners wore sweats, basically PJs, and not just in the office. He'd go to the (top 10 bank) client site dressed like that. Once I was working at the client site when the partner walked by a few rows over, flanked by all sorts of important client people. All heads turned. One of the comments I overheard was, "That guy must be really good if he's dressed like that".

I wondered what you did. You must have played some classic instrument as well, if not still.

My best "New Job interview" moment was when I was brought to the interview portion where I talk with the CTO. He is at a standing desk just lounging in his (super tall) chair. Mid interview he props one of his legs up on his desk and is essentially just displaying his crotch to my face.

I must have done a very good job keeping a straight face and not staring because I got the job offer.

My last job was a suit and tie thing, no exceptions. I didn't mind it actually, although I had to buy a bunch of suits since I only had one suit before that job.

I'd want to get a clothing presser thing if I have a job like that again.

I work in a lab, but dress business casual like topflightpro: tucked in polo, jeans/khakis, nice shoes.

As time goes on I'm spending less time in the lab and more time interacting with customers or other employees, so it makes sense. For my first couple of years here, I wore wifebeater tank tops, gym shorts and sandals like everyday.

I don't currently own a suit that doesn't make me look like a time traveling clown. I need one, but not for work, just for general wedding and fundraiser dinner type purposes.

I think I'm in that awkward window of time where everything I own is hopelessly out of fashion, but I'm not yet old enough to not be aware of it. So I either need some new clothes, or just hold out about 5 more years until I'm sufficiently out of it not to even know.

Bikes: two wheeled ones

I have two nice suits and three sportcoats (and a couple not nice suits and sport coats, and a giant tux hand me down). I almost never wear any of them. My company asks us to dress nicer than the clients, but the clients hate that and almost immediately ask you to stop. So I wore a suit first day here, and then never again.

People here wear jeans and polos mostly, but I wear slacks and button down long sleeve, usually patterned, just because I like looking a little nicer.

saying $499 is expensive for a suit is like saying $1000 is expensive for a road bike.

Yeah, I was gonna let that slide, but that's pretty darn cheap. I got a screaming deal on my last suits and they were $700 or so each. $500 is what a decent sport coat, on sale, costs.

When I was in college and interned on Wall Street, I had to wear a suit everyday. So I had a lot of suits in college. Only one was really nice though. But then I went to grad school and became a journalist instead, so I never needed to wear my suits. After I got married and started biking and working out, I lost a lot of weight. But I didn't really think about how it affected my suits until I went to a friend's wedding. I looked like a little kid wearing his dad's clothes. The suit was so big on me.

So, I went to the store and bought a new, smaller suit for wearing to weddings and stuff.

A couple years later, when I was moving here, I was taking a job at a business paper. The boss said he expected everyone in slacks and coats every day. So I went to the store to buy a couple pairs of nice dress pants and sports coats. The guy convinced me I was better off buying some cheap suits instead. So I bought a few more cheap suits. Started the new job to find out that the boss was full of ****. We wore khakis and button ups. Since I had the suits, I wore them whenever I could, which wasn't often. I left that job after 2.5 years.

A few years after that, I went to a conference for work that required everyone to wear suits and ties. Worst conference ever. Anyway, I once again found myself feeling like a little kid wearing his dad's suit. I'd continued losing weight and the smaller suits I'd bought were now too big. (Fortunately, it was a conference full of traffic engineers who hated wearing suits as much as I did, and most of them hadn't bought a new suit in 30 years, so I fit in OK.)

I again bought another, even smaller suit.

So, now I have one suit that fits really well, one suit I can get away with if I have to but is still a bit big, four suits that are just too big and a tuxedo that is way too big. (I bought my tux when I got married because I figured I'd need it again some time. I've worn it twice.)

What's funny is, in high school, I had a sports coat, size 38. It didn't take long in college to grow into a size 42. Then I dropped back to a 40, and now I'm back down to a 38.

Yeah after grad school, I had to make an abrupt upgrade in my wardrobe. Now that I have a faculty position, I seem to be the only one who ever wears a sportcoat, and I've had a number of people ask me if I'm doing a TV interview when I put on a tie (actually most days in the winter). Many faculty in the department feel that tenure is a license to start dressing like grad students again. Not being tenure track, I wouldn't know. Maybe that's in the secret letter they give you when you join that exalted society.

Oddly, no matter how my weight fluctuates, I don't seem to be able to get down below a 46L coat. It's my shoulders more than my waist. When I bought my first nice suit at the end of college, I had the hardest time going off the rack because anything that fit up top the pants would have to be taken in to the point where the pockets touched. Don't have the problem now, unfortunately.

Bikes: aggressive agreement is what I ride.

I'm dressed up for work today in a short-sleeved khaki button down shirt and green prana rock climbing pants.

I realized about 2 minutes after I changed that I look like a safari guide.

speaking of faculty positions, how did things pan out in the end? I would infer from the above that your job is secure for the foreseeable future? If so, congrats.
