Outlandish Goals
-cat 2 upgrade (i have one point)
-win a 35 +123 race in the NCNCA (pretty much everyone else would have to crash)
-somehow hit 1300 W on my power meter (max was 1050 once)
Stretch Goals, but possible
-podium San Rafael Twilight (i guess this is almost everyone's goal) in 35 +3/4 (7th this year)
-then finish the 35+123's at the same event (survived 30 minutes)
-win a race (6 top tens in 3/4s and one podium...it could happen)
-not crash (2013 crashes = zero)
Likely Goals
-join a team
Peformance goals
-arrive at 2014 at 165 lbs instead of 185 lbs like 2013 (currently at 171 despite being in italy for 3 weeks)

-cat 2 upgrade - FAIL - I think I have 10 points. Every Cat 3 and masters 3 on my team either upgraded or will upgrade after the season which makes me feel like i stayed back a grade
-win a NCNCA 35+123 race - FAIL - Though to be fair I never raced a 35+123 race as first race, always 2nd and sometimes 3rd race. it would not have matter however...i'm good enough to be there but thats about it
-1300 YES - not nearly as satisfying as I thought it would be
-Podium San Rafael 35+3/4 - FAIL - 4th...missed the podium by 1/2 a bike. F Me.
-Finish SRT 35+123s -FAIL - bout the same as last year
-win a race -YES- x2 smaller races...but i can only race against who shows up
-not crash -YES*- no race crashes....thanks god. but did crash like an idiot rolling back to my car after a race and injured a rib
-join a team - YES
-Weight goal - I was about 170lb all year
Season highlight - in one of the races I won, I was solo for 40 minutes and did a 340NP for that effort. I tried doing 340 for five minutes a week ago and couldnt do it. I'm not sure i could do that again. i had wings that day for sure.
Season low light - SRT missing the podium of the biggest race of the year by a few feet.

2 hours on average, 6-ish hours to San Dimas (more b/c we took detours on the way down), and driving to Bend is about 8 or 9 straight through. Max is about 3 hours for one-day races, 8-10 for stage races. Thinking about flying around a bit next year to do ToAD, and Tulsa, maybe some other NRC races.
Ain't nobody gonna get far in this sport without puttin' in the time/$$/gas it takes to race a lot!

I consider my results from the 20 or so races I was in this year to all be podium worthy, with the exception of 2 DNFs (1 bad gel, one too fast curve with a too high curb).
Unfortunately, there were typically between 5 and 40 other riders who the officials considered to be slighly more podium worthy. Damned officials and their bias for faster/smarter riders!

2 hours max each way, no overnights aka stage races.
In 2010 3 hours max each way.
Exception - in 2011 we drove 36 hours to get to a race, but we went to a wedding 18 hours into the drive (in Wisconsin). We drove back and didn't have time to go home first so we went to the race. Venue is 35 minutes from my house. I brought the bike, kit, etc, just in case, although I did ride once or twice while out there. I didn't need to pack the race wheels but we dragged them there and back and I used them in the race.
In the old days 5-6 hours each way. I also try to race if I fly to SoCal (Red Trolley a couple times) and raced once in Vegas when I went there for Interbike.

I did 15 races this year, didn't get top 10's in anything but I'm new to the sport.
The farthest I traveled to a race was 12 miles. 10 of the 15 races I did, the starting line was a mile from my apartment. That was one thing about living in Manhattan, it's inexpensive to race a lot. Unfortunately, it's very expensive to do everything else.

there's really no such thing as training races in NY. we just race.
there's something like 125 races a year that a NYC resident can ride to.

Some chatter on the NCNCA Yahoo page suggests there may be an interest in cutting back some events (flat business park crits in particular) in an effort to increase field sizes at other events. In particular, there is interest in protecting stage races and the "classic" races (e.g., Dunnigan, downtown crits, etc) while making new courses more challenging to better prepare NCNCA'ers for competition at the national level. From what I read, it sounds like that is the "interest", but little may change.

The LA area has a lot of crits, not as many road races compared to Northern California. We just have too many cars on the coast, and a barren, unrideable wasteland inland. We're lucky to parse out 4 blocks of road to race on. We do race year round though.
Being at the eastern most end of the LA / OC / IE Megagopolis, everything is about 90 minutes away, except for our local race series, which is 20 minutes away. Our town does have a lot of unsanctioned pretend races though.
