Agreed. I actually need to have food, water, and shelter. A coach isn't required for that. On the other hand, I very much want to win a few races. The question is whether a coach would help me realize that goal easier/faster/more effectively than not having a coach.

I'm giving it some serious thought.

They told me in grade school there were four needs: food, water, shelter and love.

Well, I'm tremendously sad to report they were WRONG! I'm still here with my food water and shelter!

Ok so to bring up a old thread. I have finished my first season Cat 5 with no coach and just self training. 8 races with 7 podiums, no wins though. I received my Cat 4 upgrade and joined a team. My goal is to continue racing and hopefully be competive so I want to get a coach. I know there are some coaches on this site but I can not send a private message to reach out to anybody so If somebody could point me in a good direction or send me a message I would appreciate it.

I'm actually more implying that if you're podiuming every cat 5 race you should do what I did which is just try the 4s and find out that you can do well there, too. Then in the 3s. Re-evaluate when you encounter resistance to success.

You may have teammates who have (or are themselves) coaches. Ask around your team.

If I could spare the extra $200/month I would, for sure. Just for a season or so, to learn and get more training ideas.

I may move in with the gf in 4-6 months, so I'll save that much or more on rent. Maybe then.

My coaching advice to you is to read through this whole thread, to get an idea of the arguments around needing a coach or not.

But like ygduf said, it sounds like you're doing fine so far, so there doesn't seem to a need for a coach.

A bunch of us cat 1's don't have coaches, a bunch of cat 1's do have coaches.

A bunch of cat 5's have coaches, a bunch of cat 5's don't have coaches.

Some coaches have coaches, some don't. I dunno.

Or maybe, since it sounds like he wants to hire a coach, he should hire a coach and evaluate what that does for him. "I am successful, therefore successful people will do what I did," is a fallacy. Even if there are superficial similarities in situations for you and him. I did pretty well as a Collegiate D and C racer myself (never technically raced as a 5). Getting a (good) coach has nonetheless been beneficial.

If you want a coach get a coach. There are a number of racers here on this forum who coach, and many more who have coaches.

There are as many coaching styles as riding styles, so a good start would be for you to think about what kind of coaching relationship you are looking for. Are you a big data head, are you looking for somebody you can communicate with every day about how you are feeling, are you just looking for general weekly guidance that you will adjust to suit your schedule, stuff like that.

It's also helpful to have some specific goals. Is there a particular race you want to win, or a particular racer you want to beat, or a particular TT time you want to hit, etc.

Thanks for all the reply's I think Ive got my mind set on getting a coach so I guess I will evaluate exactly what I'm looking for and go from there. If anyone has any good suggestions on a coach or anything pm me or let me know. I don't have anybody locally.
