I've raced in SoCal and NorCal. SoCal seems to have a lot more yelling and a lot more guys on deep wheels (that's not to say NorCal doesn't have a lot of deep wheels).

I now understand that this is not an east coast - west coast thing, it's a ydguf - TKP thing.
From the peanut gallery this almost seems like an average speed type of discussion. How many watts do I need to get to cat 1?
Ygduf seems to win races the way he posts on internet forums: by poking and prodding until somebody loses their cool and then he gets away. The point being that it seems like he's willing to try lots of little moves until something works. TKP's race reports seem to be more about one big move than lots of little ones. So that's a big difference in style.
Also Ygduf did >3x more races than TKP last year. So we're not quite comparing east coast apples with west coast apples.
But both of you guys are really strong, way stronger than most of us will ever be, that's for sure.

I think the TKP / Fudgy race is a smoke screen for the more earnestly desired mattm / gsteinb throw down

I forget where I read it, but a relevant quote is, "Bike racing is the only sport where you can train hard for 15 hours a week and still suck." I'm Exhibit A.

How fun. East coast / west coast smackdown played out in Salt Lake City.

Carlsbad GP cat 3: 11th/something
I need to work on my nerve and positioning during the final lap - I've been out of the game too much this year. I've got enough sprinting in my legs to be competitive, I just need to race more! Next season.
Fun race, raining, but warm. People were cautious into the corners, even on the final laps. People weren't being sketchy and dive bombing corners in the rain, instead working to get good position on the straights going into them - much appreciated. I felt safe.
Despite this, a buddy of mine Juan crashed right in front of me after corner 1, rear wheel just slipped out. He and I stopped together; his torso was about 12" from my front wheel; I was certain that I was going to run him over and crash myself. He slid so far though in the rain - like 20+ feet! We came to a stop together, and they let a few of us (including him) take a free lap afterward. He ended up placing 1 ahead of me, so he was clearly OK.

out walking the earth
It's been a while for me. With the knowledge that I desperately needed a win I figured I'd head north and see if I could pull a rabbit out of the hat. I headed up the thruway yesterday afternoon the exercise demons: I was in search of globalcanvas' wagging finger little girl, and a snapping turtle. I was going to race these two across the road, and if it turned into a game of frogger gone awry so be it. Downloading data now…a fuller report later.
