If you are a novice, depending on where your riding and what kind of shape your in. You may want to steer away from a SS and go for at least the 1x9 gearing. Most of the guys I know that ride SS are animals, those are guys who will pass you up like your standing still. I dream of the day i will be able to run a SS. I have ridden a 1x9, liked it alot, but I still the 2 small cogs in front.
Hmm...I remember riding a single speed from the time I was 6yo until after highschool. I don't think you "have to be an animal"...you just have to be content with getting off and walking every once in a while.
SS is for anyone.
