It would need to be a smaller diameter to put a crack in the middle of the faceplate like that. If it were larger, the faceplate wouldn't fit on properly.
If it (bar) were too large and you over tighten it...it could in theory crack in the middle b/c it's trying to pull the thing apart. If the bar were too small...the face plate would just bottom out on the face of the stem (as the bar would just wobble and spin in the "too large" hole) and the gorilla would have stripped out the screw holes instead of cracking the faceplate.
