Pepper spray sucks, for work we are exposed to it and it's not a good time. Def a solid defense against people looking to cause harm, just don't spray into the wind and know that when you do spray, you will most likely get exposed to it also, slightly. They have the pepper gel that is more controlled.

I can understand why owners let dogs run loose.
Not to start a discussion on dog ownership, but honestly people need to make intelligent decisions about whether a dog is right for them in their circumstances. My dog has a big yard and gets 3 45 minutes walks each day in the neighborhood. Good for both of us.
If you're not home all day then don't get a dog or hire someone to spend time with the dog and walk it. Unless you live in the country and can provide a large fenced area. In either case, letting a dog run loose without supervision of any kind is unacceptable but the problem is the owner, not the dog.

I live in a small town in a rural area, and generally in the country the rule is that dogs run free. Normally most of them won't chase you, but on occasion they will.

Does it work on a moving person? Or am I more likely to zap myself, lol? Suggestions welcome.
Here's how that situation is often handled in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania:

https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news...138097778.html

The three teens had cut school and were set on robbing people -- having already attacked two elderly men -- when they came upon the 65-year-old riding on the Thun Trail, according to Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams.

The cyclist was near the Bertolet Fishing Dock at S First Avenue and Chestnut Street in West Reading, Pa. around 11 a.m. when one of the teens knocked the man down, police said.
Adams picks it up from here:

"One of the juveniles punched the bike rider in the face, knocking him off his bike. Julius Johnson ran up to bike rider and kicked him."

That was when the 65-year-old pulled a gun and shot, officials said.

Johnson, 16, died at the scene while his 15-year-old alleged accomplice was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound, officials said.

Interesting how people are afraid to stand up for themselves. And what stories will they make up in order to justify being affraid.

Look, I also wouldnt try to mace them, if someone tried that I would ask them first what the f do they think they are doing, if they try being violent, then the floor would get mopped up with them. Simple self defense. No sense bragging how someone messed you up in self defense when you were looking for trouble, right?

The world is full of a holes today, I'll give you that, but if those a holes try to ruin my day I'll be polite, at first. Later, it becomes their own fault.

So mace is an softer option to approach such a situation, you know? What are we supposed to do, bend over and let them do as they want? No go, if someone is that stupid and disrespectful to others, he can expect the sam, and worse, to blow right back up in his face.

Dude, you are So Macho, I am surprised you can ride a bike with such gigantic male parts.

I guess all the blood goes to the male bits, and doesn’t get to the brain, or you might have … Read The First Post.

Not sure advising a 68-year-old woman to “mop the floor” with three guys makes a lot of sense in the real world.

But hey … I bet you can get rich selling your amazing macho essence.

I wonder, since you can easily beat down any three random males … when are you making your MMA debut? You could be a World Champion easily … those folks only fight one opponent at a time.

Simple self defense, right?

When people ask why I don’t have much hope for the world, I can direct them here.

You're pretty well the only one making a lot of sense in this thread. Escilating to any sort of weapon should be a last resort step, not the first response. OC spray is notoriously ineffective in many situations and liberal use to resolve a disagreement could very easily could result in armed confrontation. Deescalate and withdraw, like you said, best advice.

well at least no one's critiquing my cell phone idea anymore!

Since it's Easter I'll reiterate that it is always best to turn the other cheek.

Anyway just didn't want to encourage a random person to start macing people. I'm a believer in karma, it helps me get over perceived injustices from stuff like that. Now if I came across them in the act of violence, that's a totally different situation and I would most certainly show them how big my manly bits are.

Lyke, yuuuge. Just, the biggest and best you know? Totally show FAKE sad people what's what.

Kudos to OP linberl for continue to ride at 68 -- I hope I will be riding at 68 (not too far off for me).

Several thoughts:

Good to have pepper spray for dogs.

As to humans, I would only use it if you feel you are in a "life or death" situation. Because, as soon as you pull it out, you will now be in a life or death situation.

A punk who would intentionally harass an elderly woman for kicks is truly an antisocial outlier, and extremely dangerous. Threatened with pepper spray, he will either back off or overpower you. So, I'd reserve it only for a situation that is already life threatening.

You crack me up, seriously. I havent laughed like this in a long time. But thats a good thing.
I said what I would do, if you read again, youll see that is all that I have wrote. Nowhere did I
suggest the OP does the same, because I have read the entire thread.

As for all the other "macho" thing, what? I dont know where that came from, I mean, some ideas
you have there

I am a very pleasant person in general, and like to think well behaved, but that does not exclude
the fact that I will defend myself if someone was to pull a stunt like that. These days, people tend to confuse politness for weakness. Following that, I think you confused the
todays common "macho" bs displayed by newfangled kids and young people with someone who is
the exact opposite of that, but is not affraid to stand up for themselves. I can be polite, and I can be the very opposite. There is a time and place for all of that, as required by circumstances.

You wonder why I do not engage in beating down other people simply because? Sorry, but I am not one of the types to exerscize such behaviour as I find it rude and obnoxoius. I got nothing to prove to anybody, just want to live my life in peace.

I dont give any thought at all to the media circuss that MMA is these days, I doesnt interest me in
the slightest, but again - what does that have to do with being prepared to defend yourself?

I mean, you pulled out a lot of (your) presumptions here. Also, presumptions that have no connection
the reality.

But back to the topic, tell me, what is one to do when faced with such threats? Stand down and let them
do as they please - is that your answer? Just cuorious to know.

Regardless his acerbic attitude, his general point in this case is sound. One should *always* look to deescalate any confrontation, regardless how "in the right" (for lack of a better term) you may feel about the situation. Getting out of the area might leave your bravado unsatisfied and wound your pride, but you have to get over that and get above it. Unwarranted self depreciation is far preferable to the sucking chest wound courtesy of the 9mm belonging to guy you pepper sprayed after he cut you off and got out of his car to yell at you.

Maelochs is notorious for being rude to everybody. If I were you I'd just ignore him. Almost every post he makes is him being rude to somebody. The mods on this site love to allow blatant rule violations from Maelochs and other long time jerks.
EDIT: I don't mean just not reading his posts. I mean add him to your ignore list. This time he implied you were stupid. Next time he will be typing the same type of rude garbage to somebody else.

Maybe Maelochs is an internet bully because he never stands up for himself irl. It might explain his rude behavior.
Thank you, I have figured as such. Also, I have been far longer on this forum going way back then such characters. What I did not realise is that such people are tolerated now. Guess times changed, ah well. If hes considered long time now, Im ancient to him haha.

Look really, I do not give much thought to such people, always been around us, always will be. I have real life issues to solve and I prefer using my time to solve important things. And also, lest not forget, if we were to get offended at every little thing, life would be very hard.

You know, the things that such people dont really understand is that there is a proper response to each situation. If there is a nuisance, its not worth wasting my time on it. However, if someone makes aggresive moves or threats, that will be met with appropriate actions, do not be mistaken. That does not mean going aroind looking for trouble, just standing your ground. Do to the others as you want to be treated, nothing else.
