Fer crissakes!!! It was Rodney King......a low quality human.
Too bad is wasn't buckshot.
As far as I'm concerned he was simply an @hole on a bike.
Jeeeez!

The OP must be bored.

Too bad another human being's misfortune is being used to feed media narcissism, and that of the OP.

There is a serious point that this goofy thread points up. Bicycling accident stats include everyone hurt on a bike from Cat 1 racers to OCP nut cases to enthusiasts to weekend warriors to the guy on the sidewalk with the kids to the immigrant with no license on the sidewalk going to work at 4:00 a.m., to the drunk weaving home from the bar, to the 6 year old riding down the driveway into the road, to Rodney King. It's hard to know just how safe you are on the road because the stats conflate all the categories of riders.

Not only that, the stats and those who manipulate them often conflate all categories of injury severity from none, to scraped knee, to broken spoke/bent rim, to life threatening and permanently crippling in their roll up of the effect of "crashes."

I like it. I don't care if other people are writing. I still like it. It's chock full of philosophical stuff. Yeah, like the concept of "choice". So we have some new definitions.

Real Cyclist: One who chooses to ride a bike, over all other options.

Fake Cyclist: One who rides a bike, but in their hearts would rather be traveling by some other means.

I guess that makes me a "fake cyclist" because deep in my heart I would rather be riding... Whoa! That was close. I almost got banned there. Or at least deleted. Or sent to Foo. I know it's wrong. But I still like it.

That shouldn't be a concern. I quite enjoy riding my motorcycle. So does Joe. My last road trip was to Interbike in Vegas. It's all good.

Yeah, that's all easy for you to say. But then the Pope never said anything about not riding motorcycles. Now that I think about it, he never specifically said anything about not riding Rachel Ward either. Hmmm, maybe I'm okay after all.

Of course they are. But they're still both 'painters' (although I daresay your ex would prefer 'artist' just to avoid such confusion) So why do you have a problem with calling RK a cyclist?

I think you can get a pretty good idea how safe you are on the road without the help of statistics. It's how safe you are compared to everyone else that you won't find without stats, and even then, as you say, it's a pretty wild guess at best.

I wouldn't have left it like that.

Can’t complain too much when the mods grant your request. A few bucks will get you a red star.

Yeah but silly statistics are used to inflate the dangers of certain bicycle facilities... that is the real issue about "the stats..." a scraped knee on an isolated bike path is given the same statical "weight" as a broken collar bone due to a collision with an auto. And this reporting is then used to suggest that "facilities are no safer..."

Yeah. That's what happens when wild guesses are taken as established facts.
