ZooBomb officially began at the end of the Portland Bike Summer in August 2002, by then the hill had been accessible by train for more than 10 years and of course people had been downhilling there for longer than that, just not in any particularly organized fashion.

I don't know about all of Germany. But in Berlin, the majority of bike lanes are ON the sidewalk. The system seems to work pretty well (pure ancedote). But it is fairly logical to assume that will vastly increase the number of bike-ped collisions over a system where the bike lanes are on the road.

Small-town Germany is different, too; no special bike lanes, little traffic, and the riders are mainly seniors.
