OH! Another Can of Worms ( my can opener is getting dull)
Article out of Pennsylvania about a 4 foot passing law. Read the comments to get an idea of the attitudes

Sandy Shoop of Boiling Springs isn’t a cyclist but drives almost daily on State Route 641, a two-lane road.
That will be very dangerous,” she said of the proposed four-foot law. “You might as well stop behind [the cyclist] and let the other car pass by” in the other lane before passing the bicycle.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and we always made fun of OHIO drivers. My father remembered only one car in town when he was young (1917). I am ready to walk away from the automobile and go sustainable-culture.
It's like a turkey shoot when it's 100,000 turkeys and one shooter you have a chance. When you are the only turkey and you have 100,000 people trying to run down, because they are idiots about motor vehicle operation, odds are you will get hit. ( And yes I was hit about a year ago)

I know the commenters on these posts are just a vocal and stupid minority, growing internet-nads when they can be anonymous like that, but I'm very much afraid I'd be in prison if I lived there, for killing some stupid fool. My BS tolerance has steadily eroded over the last 20 years, to the point where I'd probably be better off someplace like Mackinac Island.

Forgive me for deviating from the internet-commenter-bashing theme of this thread, but this caught my eye:
I think this is even more important to safety than the 4-foot buffer. On the narrow 2-lane PA road that's part of my daily commute, most people have no problem crossing the double yellow to pass me, but occasionally someone will try to squeeze through, even with no opposing traffic. And, frankly, I've scanned the PA vehicle code for explicit permission to cross the double yellow, without success. I'd be happy to see this "clarification" in the code.
The proposal would clarify that it’s legal for a vehicle to cross the double yellow line on a two-lane road, if that is necessary to provide the four-foot clearance when passing a cyclist.

Maybe try the slow moving vehicle traffic code to see if your state spells out the same.
