Saw this on R&R today.

PDX Bicyclists. OMG! (PDX)
So I am driving to work this AM and ahead of me is this bicyclist blowing through the red lights. I patiently wait, us usual, for the light to turn green for me. Finally, I'd had enough. I caught up with the bonehead bicyclist and blew by him through the red-light that he was running. Whoo-hooo. We get upto Broadway and he pounds on my passenger fron window, in which I roll down. He says you Fu*king ran that red light! I said I decided to follow your example. Why do you think it's OK for you to run the lights and expect everyome else to not get agitated watching bikes blow lighjts. So then he says he's part of the "Bicycle Alliance" who are exempt from the traffic lights - he says we just need to look and go! I said you keep doing that and you're gonna make a nice hood ornament.
.
Has anyone heard of this? Some "Special Rules" for bicyclists? Anyway, he's wrong. Thankfully, there are some great bike riders but this example wasn't one of them.
Some respect for the law you have there, Mighty Motorist!

This driver could have killed the cyclist or somebody else

Maybe I'm not understanding the situation, but it sounds like the motorist is no more wrong than the bicyclist. I'd like to hear more about this "Bicycle Alliance" as well.

In the eyes of the law, yes, they are both equally at fault, Geapel731. But who had the potential to cause MORE harm from running the red light?

And the cyclist, if s/he did indeed say that, is BS. The BTA wants cyclists to follow the same rules as everybody approach.

Maybe I do. Plenty of drives write rants about cyclists on R&R Portland

Yea actually it is the "bicycle empire" and we don't blow thought lights we use our decoder rings to change them from 100m

Agreed.

I think folks here should create a "sticky" listing ALL the do's and dont's(laws/statutes) for each state, so folks can at least get a better understanding of what they can and cannot do. A sort of reference guide.

The driver probably made up the story about the cyclist saying he was exempt for waiting at red lights because of the BTA (Bicycle Alliance). And there is a 50% chance the cyclist did probably say it, I dunno.

But it is completely believable that the cyclist ran the red light, that the motorist then ran the red light, and that the cyclist caught up to the driver and pounded on the window.

Sounds like some PDX people will say and/or believe anything said or read.

So we should have a sliding scale of "how illegal" it is based on potential damage? Maybe we can make it based on the GVW of the vehicle... $100 for the first 100 lbs. and $10 for every 1000 lbs. after that!

Why not? We already have a much more subjective sliding scale: That of very fallible human police officers, often with a grudge against bicycles and motorcycles (ask me how I know) who write tickets in a much higher percentage for much less danger and smaller actual infractions. If the cops were to know that spending the same amount of time would only cost the bicycle $20, but an auto driver $120, do you think they would also ticket a little more proportionally?

Good idea actually, based on the potential damage the violation is likely to cause. It would be similar to assault with your hands vs assault with a gun.

How do you know police officers often have a grudge against bicycles and motorcycles?

Cops are different all over, but my experiences with the local mounties have been very positive as a cyclist. Not so much as a motorcyclist...

There's a cop sitting across from me eating low fat yogurt. He says donuts are bad for you.
