Question for the Mechnics or

Anyone who wants to respond,,,,I want your personal opinion on a E.P X. 303 about 8 years old, it's got 105 components, would it be worth $800.00 ? this person has one for sale, looks to be in good shape ,but before I saw it I hadn't even heard of that Make,,, do they have a reputation good or bad??I know I'm not providing much info ,but basicly just want to know if EPX is good or not so good

2003 EPX 303 - 105 - BikePedia

So 12 years old....

I would want to have a very experienced carbon fiber frame person check it out before even test riding it.

I also think that the price is ~2X too high; but I am not a carbon fiber frame person.

I also think the price is way too high for a bike that old (last made in 2003 so, as noted, it's at least 12 years old) with mid-line components and a frame of unknown quality and condition.

The make and model are unfamiliar to me also but a Google search turned up the information that the parent company was Australian (the frames were made in Asia) and has been out of business for years so there is no support or documentation available. Unless you can get a very large price concession, I'd keep looking.

IMO, but I'm not he right guy, $800 for any 8yr old 105 bike seems high.

Maybe you'll do better posting this in the Classic & Vintage what's it worth forum.

I'd have no interest in a 12 year old carbon frame, regardless of price.

$300. Well, $400 maybe... If the entire bike is in like-new perfect condition, and you are willing to wait for someone looking for one of those.

But no no-name bike with a carbon frame branded by a long defunct no-name company made in Asia by an unnamed company is worth $800.

You would be lucky to get $400 for a Specialized or Trek bike of that age without a long advertising campaign.

I just don't see any CF bikes for sale around here in that range. Even building one from scratch for that price would be a challenge.

The reviews I'm seeing on the EPX 303 are all positive (although dated).
EPX 303 - Dura-Ace 2003 Road Bike Reviews - RoadbikeReview.com

$800 may be a bit high for an older bike from a defunk manufacturer... but I would say $300-$400 is very low.

Perhaps somewhere in the middle. $600? Depending on the condition, of course. I'm assuming in very good condition. If it has been beat to death... then less.

It may be the market where you are.

You can buy Specialized Epics and Trek and Raleigh (Techiums) Composites all day for $200-$300, and $400 would be tops. Treks 2500, 5200 and 5500s post for sale at between $500-$900 and never sell. Any bike posted above $300 is going to sit unsold for a long time in the LA/SoCal Market.

In a Market where thousands of bikes are listed daily for sale, there is no demand for old, used carbon bikes. Bike Snobs may be clammering for the newest latest carbon designs, but no one is looking to buy old carbon bikes for much more than their component groups will bring. People/Buyers are interested in used steel and titanium bikes, and to some respect aluminum bikes. Carbon, no so much.

Flippers have been trying to unload some Trek Composite bikes (that look rather nice) for between $300-$500 for close to a year in my area. No Takers, in fact, I had the chance to buy one of the bikes about this time last year for about $180, including spare wheels and extra computers before the Flippers got it, and no one wanted it then at the lower price (I don't know what the Flipper got it for). I do know that the Flipper has been moving the price up and down between $300-$500, and that bike is one that is still for sale. I posted it in the "Are you Looking For One of These?" Thread last year before the Flipper got it.

I agree that bikes sell faster below $200 than above $800, but most of the $200 bikes I'm seeing are absolute junk.

Mid range steel bikes are being advertised for $300.

If you have nice bikes by the dozen down in LA, it might almost be worth it to pack a few dozen up and ship them North... except one could quickly saturate a small market.

Unless there was a major defect that showed up in the EPX, it would likely be just as easy to maintain as a Trek or Giant, and there are advantages of riding something that is unique. Beyond the frame, all the components are pretty much stock.
