Frame used in salt, how to clean it?
Hello all,
I just got a free Nishiki Ariel mountain bike frame, an elevated chainstay frame designed by Richard Cunningham. It has some rust, and was almost certainly used on salted roads. Once I get out the stuck seatpost and bottom bracket I am planning to clean it up, inspect the damage, spray some Rustoleum on the bad areas if necessary, and coat the inside with Boeshield T-9. My question is, should I use something to clean out the frame before applying the Boeshield? If so, what? Should I hose it out thoroughly and let it dry outside on a hot day?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Instead of Boeshield, I'd recommend J.P. Weigles Bicycle Frame Saver Rust Inhibitor. It won't clean up existing rust; however, it will prevent further rusting as it blocks off the oxygen needed to create rust.
If you want to clean up any rust that you can reach, you could try a rifle cleaning kit.

If you suspect that there may still be some salt on or in the frame, start by washing with water and detergent. Fresh water is the best solvent for salt which should be removed before applying oils or waxes which will seal it in place.
