Help... 90's 4130GT

I have bought an old 4130 GT off eBay. Spent £££££'s buying all bits for it. Now the day of putting it together, and found that I am missing a Crown Race washer... the guy I bought it off didn't send it to me.

I have been told that I can't just use any crown washer as it may not work.

Does anyone out there know where I can get the right one or an alternative that will work?

First, do you have any recourse through eBay? If someone sold you an incomplete headset, you shouldn't pay for it.

Do you have a bike co-op in your region? That may be a source for older, rare parts. It may be asking too much to find just one piece. You'll be looking for a complete headset.

I volunteer at a co-op and I spend a bit of time sorting through headsets. I know it's tough for that style of bike. Good luck with it.

Put one in an envelope and mail it to him. If you work at a co-op, they get all that stuff for free, so it's not like it would be stealing or anything.

Yes, mixing headset parts can be problematic, see this recent thread Threaded Headset - Mixed Sizes?

But for the cost of a completely new headset, around $20 for a decent but basic one, the choice to cut bait and go fishing is a cheap choice to make. Do understand that some dimensions need to match up. Fork crown race seating diameter, stack height, head tube cup sleeve diameter, threading spec. If these are not familiar terms then you're not prepared to make a choice yet. Andy

"Crown Race Washer"... never seen one... because they don't exist.

although, i'd imagine some poorly translated parts diagram for a steering bearing assy. has labeled the crown race as a "washer", so it's just GOTTA be true!

what's a 'crown race washer'?

if you meant 'keyed washer' those are pretty easy, just get one the same size 1" or 1.1/8"
https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Heads.../dp/B000AO5KYW

if you mean 'crown race' ... well you're in more trouble.

and who takes the crown race off when packing a bike anyway? you probably meant the former...

or maybe you meant something totally different, for lack of correct parts vocabulary.... who knows
