Walmart Quest Mountain Bike Assembly

Has anyone else came across an issue with Handlebar assembly? I got the Walmart 39.99 Bike by Quest. I was trying to assemble the handlebars and cannot seem to get the bar down inside the frame. I noticed a black cap that is covering the end of the bar that gets inserted into the frame.

Is this cap suppose to come off? At the top of the bar is an Allen Wrench bolt. I tried hammering with rubber mallot and then end of the bakc cap broke and I noticed the bolt, and this leads me to believe that this cap must come off, but it is on securly.

Any help would be appreciated. This is the last thing I have to do.

Thanks,
Jay

Jay, welcome to BikeForums.

Pictures of the situation would surely help. But I'm going to have to say that you're getting what you pay for in a $40 bicycle.

I'm going to redirect this thread over to the bicycle mechanics forum and maybe they'll be able to help you a little more.

{Mechanics - be nice to the gent will ya'? }

If the cap is on the side that goes into the steerer, it has to come off. Is the cap anything like the clear plastic cap on the steerer in this photo it has to come off: https://sheldonbrown.com/images/pop-top-stem.jpg

Maybe if you try loosening the allen bolt on the top it might come off easier.

maybe this helps:

Come on now. Let's help this guy. In no time he will tire of the wally mart bike and be looking to upgrade. Pictures or a link to the bike on a web site would help greatly. My guess is that it is a quill stem and the a plactic top cap is covering the bolt or allen head which would allow it to go into the fork.

OP - original poster - we await more info to try to help.

Bikes: Many, often

I don't go to Wal*Mart for anything. I disagree with their policies on so many levels. I'm not wealthy, either, but I'm sure I buy less barely necessary junk by not shopping there.

I'm not well off enough to afford to pay someone to work on my car, so I taught myself. If you can't afford a bike shop bike, you need to head to the library (free!) and check out a book on bike maintenance and become your own department store bike repair "expert".

I think you haven't got a good answer because your description of the problem and the parts you have is too vague. If you could post a picture of the parts in question we could give you a better answer.
The first question to answer is do you have a threaded or threadless stem? See this page to help identify. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html
