Ultegra Chain ?
So I installed a new 6600 chain yesterday following all of the instructions for inserting the special pin. On insert I think I push it about 1mm farther in than necessary but after breaking off the back piece I back it off a bit and now both sides are flush. Am I at any risk of the pin failing? I'm a bit paranoid as I have a CF frame without a replaceable hanger, so a chain hanging in the RD could cause some major headaches. If this is risky I would probably try to find a quick connector and use it instead.

Well, it is hard to say whether you will or won't have a problem with that pin. Pushing it in too far will remove the peening on the head, and could distort the side plate and/or enlarge the hole. To be safe, I'd replace the pin or use a master link.

From what I read it seems you cannot just push out the bad pin and insert a new one. The instructions say always break the chain at one of the regular links not the reinforced one. I assume this means that once you push it completely through the hole is now too large to seat another reinforced pin correctly.
Options seem to be ride it and watch it closely for a few rides or push it out and go with a connex link. I guess I'll decide based on the input I get here.

You are correct. Don't simple replace the pin. You would have to replace the entire link. That's not a problem other than consuming two more replacement pins.

Well, I stopped by my LBS and they said based on my description it would 'probably' be alright. Since they had a KMC Missing Link10 and the wrench said he has used this on Shimano 10spd chains with no problems I just got that. For $3 it seemed the prudent thing to do. Only downside is it is a one time connection, unlike the old 9spd SRAM power link you can't link and unlink these.

SRAM's 10-speed links aren't reusable either. The only 10-speed ones I know of that are are the Wipperman Conex.

Just to close this out I put the KMC missing link in yesterday and it worked like a charm.
