hi everyone, my first post here (of many i'm sure, as i'm diving into a huge overhaul and upgrade project of my serotta csi this winter).

my first question is regarding stem replacement. i've got a beautiful serotta T1 carbon fork that i don't care to part ways with, but it's a 1" threaded and the stem options for this size fork (especially if you want to use a bar with a 31.8mm clamp diameter) are quite limited now.

i've seen these converters for changing a threaded to modern unthreaded (such as this one from nashbar) and since i haven't seen many of these around, i'm wondering if this is a wise and safe route to go, or if i should stick with the 1" quill?

Personally, I'd stick with the Quill stem. More options
for adjusting height (not sure of adjustments with
adapter). I'd look for a Serotta engraved stem that
were available from ITM, Cinelli and 3TTT. Serotta still
has some Ti Quill stems available check their web site
they are priced to move but size is very limited.
You can still find quills on e-bay, and alot of retaillers
still have stock on hand.
I'm guessing you meant F1 fork as Serotta never made
a T1 fork. The real deal ride is the Serotta steel fork but
thats just my personal opinion (highly biased I might add).

You're right about stem choices these days, especially if you wanna go for the larger bar clamp diameter in your case. Yes, these adapters are pretty solid, IMO. I know several roadies who have gone this route for the conversion. They seem happy.

there's a nice looking 100mm serotta stem on ebay right now. while the converter kind of sounds like its more trouble than it's worth, there are some nice 31.8 bars i'd like to try. hmmm...

i currently have an old controltech stem on my bike that needs to be swapped out for something a bit shorter.


and yes, i meant F1 fork, typo on my part.

in short, my project involves upgrading a bunch of the worn 5-season old Ultegra on my bike for 9 speed DA.

i'm replacing the shifters, rear derailleur, casette, headset, chainrings and well as recabling, new bars and stem, overhauling the other stuff, and the tricky part, trying to learn enough to make it all work

I have these on 4 of my 5 bikes and love them. They allowed me to experiment with stem lengths easily because of the 2 bolt clamp on most threadless stems (don't have to remove bar tap and levers every time). Chucksbikes.com is a good source of cheap name brand stems if you want to try different lengths.
