Going a different route...
I am in the process of rebuilding my '90 Schwinn 434. Instead of using the old 7sp stuff off of the 754 I have, I am going with a 9sp setup. I just want to make sure that the parts I want to use are all going to be cooperative. I plan to buy/use used parts where I can to save some cash.
I have a Shimano 2200 (8-9sp) rear hub laced to a Weinmann LP18. i bought a 9sp Ultegra CS-6500 (12-25) cassette.
i have a triple front crank that i would like to use, but it's older and idk if it will work with the 9sp setup. It's a Sakae Custom off of a ~'82 Puch Maxima. if not, i need to know what i need to buy. i don't need a triple, but i'd like to if i can do it cheap enough. i don't want a compact. (square taper BB)
i went by the LBS yesterday and asked them about what i was planning on doing. they said that i would need a long cage RD to use a triple w/ 9sp. is this true? will a 10sp RD work with a 9sp cassette/shifter?
i would like to use downtube shifters, but i haven't ruled out an STI setup (if i can get it cheap enough). are there any 9sp DT shifters? i see some 10sp DA ones on ebay, so i would assume so. will 10sp shifters work with 9sp cassette/RD?
if i use a triple crank, i need a triple compatible FD, correct? does it also have to correlate
to the size of the cassette? is there a 9sp triple FD with a 31.8 clamp?
is there anything i'm missing? sorry for the very newbish questions, but i want to make sure i get the right stuff.

The old chain rings won't have the shifting aids that modern rings do, but that won't keep them from shifting. Use the Sugino and prefer friction shifters.
You will need a long cage RD. 10-speed should work, though you have to be more specific as some use different pull ratios (and others work backwards).

ok, specifically i am looking at these:

i have pretty much ditched the triple idea. i'm looking at used ultegra because they are in my price range. also ditching the STI idea, as they are way too expensive, and tend to fail. DT is the way to go. now to find 9sp DT shifters. would a friction setup be reasonable?

you do need a triple FD, they have a wider inner cage to help reach down and get the chain of the granny. the biggest compatibility concern compatibility wise is that narrow 9/10 speed chains don't need as wide a FD cage, so using something older could give you problems (namely throwing your chain occasionally)
I don't know much about 9/10 speed compatibility, but you are probably better off sticking with 9 speed shifters and cassette at the least. 10 speed RD may be compatible. you can find 9 speed DT shifters on the net.

well the old crank needs a lot of cleaning and polishing, and new chain ring bolts because they are super rusted. the BB is probably toast as well. if i can get a newer, shiny crank that would match, thats what i'd rather do. like i said, i am going to ditch the triple. so disregard all the triple crank questions.
i've looked at recent prices, and other online prices and i believe as long as it's close to what i've seen i can afford it. i'll set a max and if it goes higher, so be it. ( i know i wont get them at the prices they are at.)

Nah, they exist, but I think the only place you are likely to find some is the internet and you better be willing to pay a bit of a premium. IF the OP is willing to go the friction route he can probably get away with just about any set of DT shifters in friction mode, which will be much cheaper.

they are DA, and if i hear back from the seller i will bid on them. i don't expect they'll go for anything i'm willing to pay though. i have the suntour 7sp accushift shifters off of the 754 and i have no problem with friction. those will do?

+10 You have an aluminum frame with the dropouts spread to 126mm. You are taking a serious risk spreading an aluminum frame. If you want vintage but also 9 speed, find a good steel frame instead.

All 7/8/9/10 chains have the same internal width - 3/32. Meaning even a "10-speed" chain will fit on "7/8/9/" speed rings. Perfectly. It's the outside width that differs.

The OP stated that donor parts are from a different bike. It's a good point though, he should check the dropout spacing of the bike being rebuilt. Lots of early 90's bikes had spacing of 128 for use with either and some used 130 with spacers on the axle when using 7sp
