Campagnolo cams, interchangeability of
Hi guys,
I know that in the heart of Campy Ergos is a cam that dictates the number of gears the shifter can handle, and I belive that Campy bar ends use the same cam. So how about Campy down tube shifters? Do they still make them, and do they use the same cam? Suppose I have an older pair of Ergos, and manage to score a pair of DT shifters with a more updated number of speeds, could I then plunder the DTs out of their cam and stick it in the Ergos?

Are you trying to fix the Ergos or make some DT 10s shifters?
They no longer make Campy down tube shifters, however the bar ends are mounted the same way as the DT shifter were so you could realistically use them for DT shifters, but they would need a stop made for them since that wouldn't be built in. I have an article reference about it somewhere in my bookmarks along with which cams are actually interchangeable...
You could also convert later generation Campy DT shifters to ten speed by changing out the cams in them for some from the Ergo shifters, at least for 10s. I haven't seen reference to 11s.
At the end of the day it became to expensive for me to try get the bar end shifters and then modify them or find some late gen 9s DT shifters and modify them. Shifters alone at eBay and sec market prices started putting everything at $200 to $300 for DT campy 10s shifters. I went with some Shimano 7900 DT shifters that are still made with J-Tek shiftmate. It works very well with my Campy drivetrain and only cost around $90 after everything was purchased.

The parts that you are referring to is most often called an index gear since it had gear-like teeth. For some reason, Campy goes not list the part for the bar end shifters as a spare, like they do for ergo levers.

Edit: Brandford does not sell the index gear separately.
From pictures, it does not look to me like the index gears in a bar end is the same as an ergo lever.

Basically I'm trying to widen my options.
Campy 10 will operate a Shimano RD + a Shimano 8 speed cassette w/o any issues. Shimano 8 would provide me with a good balance between cost & performance for a commuter. Having failed miserably with putting Campy Ergos on a bullhorn bar I'm now trying for plan B = aero levers and bar end shifters. Campy 10 bar ends are out of budget for a commuter, Shimano 8/9 aren't that cheap either. If they are compatible, and available within budget I could pull the cam out of my Ergos, stick it in either a set of bar ends or DT shifters(turning a DT into a bar end is a manageable issue) and I'd be "all" set - hopefully for less money than for a pair of Shimano 8/9 bar ends

If your not/can't use your ergos why wouldn't you just sell them then purchase the shifter that would work for your drive train? Why attempt to rip apart something good?
So your drive train is a Shimano RD and a Shimano 8s cassette?
How about these:
https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-SL-BS6.../dp/B000F5EFOC
8s shifter for $60. ready to go and everything and your Ergos should at least bring twice that. 9s is just a little more.
I understand wanting to use something you have but in the case of Campy shifters cobbling something together usually triples your budget and time to make it work.
I understand now where you were headed but a late era sets of Campy DT shifters sell for $100+, the typical 9s DT in good/new condition usually sell for $180+ . You can't use anything from Campy that has the 2 spring indexing with the ergo cams which is 99% of what you see as "affordable" DT Campy shifters, usually 7s. Shimanos at $60+ are a deal and you don't have to cobble anything together. And if you sell your ergos you would make money on the deal with Shimano shifters.
