Bottom bracket/crankset compatibility
I am the proud owner of a 1980s Raleigh Scott Tinley technium, and recently decided to try fixed gear. I bought this crankset https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Nexus-Bi...ht_1514wt_1137
It seems to not want to go onto my bottom bracket/spindle (which is stock) should I be having compatibility issues, or do I need to hammer it on with a rubber mallet? I think they are both a standard square taper, but I haven't checked the specific size

Hello Mso872 welcome to the forums. what do you mean it does not fit? your old BB spindle is square yes? does it just not go on far enough?
the problem is you bike has a double crank, from 20 some years ago, and it needs a longer spindle than your new crank requires. check with the seller or on the shimano website to see what spindle length you need.
odds are you current spindle is about 115-118mm and you ned a 103 or so.
OH what brand are your old cranks? shimano, SR, Ofmega?

Or... maybe not, I just know they say suntour on them. Do I need a new bottom bracket or just the spindle part? I'm hoping a local shop will have them

. Do I need a new bottom bracket?? <-- yes... look for shimano UN something. Not expensive and last long time. The issue will be to determine the size of the bb you need. Use common sense. Just in case new ones are symmetric, old stuff usually was not symmetric.
Good luck
