Installing water bottle cage on frame w/o inserts.

I have a steel single speed/fixed track frame without inserts for attaching bottle cages. How have you folks in similiar situations attached your water bottle cages? Is there a heli-coil type insert that can be installed so that a cage can be screwed on? My last resort would be to use self-tapping screws but I would rather take a cleaner, more professional looking approach.

Go to Nashbar and search for Zefal Gizmo.

I have seen on numerous occasions people use Zip Ties or Hose Clamps to put water bottle holders on their bikes. They put a piece of rubber behind it to save frame from scratching. Of course with a little imagination I have seen it look very classy when all said and done.

Not sure if this is what you were hoping for.

If you are feeling froggy and want to do a little bit of drilling on your frame you can drill 2 holes and install Rivet nuts mcmaster.com Part Number 97467A639 and viola you have a water bottle mount.

If you are installing riv nuts, here is a neat trick from your friends at Park Tool.

And here are Zefal Gizmos holding the cage to my Falcon.

I love Gizmos. Easy to install, cheap, do the job and allow me to remove or relocate the cage if needed without altering the frame.

Thanks, JS, that's a helpful article. Also, your Gizmo looks clean, too.

Walmart around here sells a bottle cage with a clamp. Easily mouts the cage to down tube, seat tube, bars, seat post, etc. Cheap and easy.
