Gore Ride on Removal

I currently have Gore Ride On, fully sealed cables on my bike. I need to take my right Sram brifter off of my bike for some repair work. Is there a way I can get the rear brake cable off without pulling it all of the way through the housing? Because the end of the cable where it is bolted onto the brake is deformed, if I try to pull it through the housing, I'll end up shredding the thinner section of the housing.

if the cable has some extra length, you might think about cutting the deformed end off before pulling it through.

i don't know much about brifters, so i won't suggest what i had in mind about them. sorry. i would think there would be a solution though.

This isn't specific to gore cables necessarily, but one of the little tricks I figured out while flipping beaters and trying to reuse cables was to get in the habit of cutting an inner cable on the tensioned side of the anchor bold on the derailleur or brake, unthreading it and then making up for the shorter cable by trimming the housing down an inch or so. Or half an inch in two places or something- you get the idea.

yep, this trick also tends to improve shifting/brakes, since often times the housing ends were previously cut sloppily(ideally you cut straight across w/o burs, file/grind the end flat), and long housings add friction in general.

I don't think Gore made brake cables for SRAM (just shifter cables) so your title is a little misleading, but I usually just recable when I have to remove a shifter for maintenance. You can get a complete set of cables these days for around $35 (jagwire et. al.)

Other than that, Dan's suggestion is worth a shot - most bikes seem to have some excess housing anyway.
