Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

VERY unlikely. No one who has ever worked on a threadless fork would ever even consider a compression plug (or starnut and cap) would hold the stem adequately. Someone, plain and simple, forgot to add the shim.

Thanks, I know, and I'm very upset about it. Who know what would have happened if I went out on the road? I know I should go back there and confront them about it, but sometimes I'm not confrontational enough!! Chances are they'll say I lost it!
