That's good as hell. I love forests, don't have any like that here.
Magic behind it? Don't know about that, but I can speculate on the technicals... Slide film, probably Fuji, scanned on a not-so-hot scanner. Near mid-day light, either a bonfire or a fog machine, and it looks like one fill flash.

Technically, it might be possible to put fake smoke in there that looks that good. There's no way someone just shooting for a BMX magazine would do that, though, and magazines like that frown on manipulated photos so they wouldn't do it themselves.

Hard to make that much fog at high noon, even in cold England. I tried Googling the photographer, and came up with this article.
