Like I said, it isn't rust, thats just from the Argon from welding.

I like them.

In other news, i broke my HP point and shoot jank. So now i really really want a new nice camera. And i decided on a Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel. I found a few on eBay but i have no cash to pay my friend if he bids for me or an eBay account to bid myself.

It's not the camera, it's the photography. Google Holga photography, then tell me it's the camea.

Just get the Canon Rebel that Kinetik is getting. It's a good camera for starting out with DSLRs.

Or you could look for a Nikon D50/D70, or Pentax *ist D/DS/DL/K100D. The K100D is only like $400 new, which is pretty cool. It's comparable to the Rebel or D50.

Some actual artwork from my cartooning class. The first two were in the art show but I don't think they are that good.

This one was from study hall.

And one photo.

Hey Madman, what do you think of the Canon Powershot S3 IS? I've always wanted to get into photography more, but my rents don't let me use their camera much. Now it's grad gift time though, and mom mom gave me a limit of about $450, but I can't seem to find anything else that seems decent in that price range. At least in the retail stores around here. I did find some Sony cybershot ones, but I wont buy a sony.

Chris Gabriel: If that's not good, I should kill myself now. I still can't color inside the lines.

It's alright. It's capable of making some good photos, but right now all of the compacts on the market have some shortcomings. That one has an EVF instead of a real glass viewfinder, so when you're using it it won't really feel like a real camera. It doesn't have a hotshoe to use external flashes like all DSLRs, and there's some shutter lag and it won't do too well at high ISO (in low light).

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the Canon Digital Rebel is the most popular starter DSLR for a reason. The new versions (XT and XTI) are more expensive, but the original goes for around $3-400 with the 18-55mm kit lens, used. If buying used isn't a problem, look at the ones I listed in post #637 up there too, and maybe read the reviews on www.dpreview.com.

If you have to buy new, this one might be a good option:
https://www.adorama.com/ISGDGX1S.html
It's just a rebadged Pentax *ist DS2, which is discontinued now. Has the Pentax mount, similar features to a Rebel or D50, etc. But you can get them new for $430.

Not much point going with a compact to learn photography on when you can afford an SLR. The advantages to a rebel would be slightly faster flash sync speed (only useful when using flash in the middle of the day) and lower minimum ISO (a little bit less grain). You'd need to buy a flash card since most DSLRs don't come with one.

I thought the S3 IS is a DSLR though? It's a grad gift so i think my mom bought it already cause it was on sale. She wouldn't spend the extra on the rebel.

No, DSLRs have interchangeable lenses, the S3 has a fixed one.

Screw it, just shoot with what you have, it has enough manual controls to do a lot more than most people will ever know how to do with it. You'll know if it's ever time to move to an SLR.

i like my Nikon FM3A...and all of my older Nikons (FG's)
they older ones are cheap to repair...for my 'normal' film cameras, I love them (i own 3)

my Hasselblad is good for the medium format, but I'm too poor to afford any lenses (the film backs and view finders were bad enough!)

On the canon website there is a huge list of interchangeable lenses that it says are compatible with the "powershot" series cameras.

Those aren't lenses... well, in a way. They go in front of the camera's lens and either widen or narrow the field of view, make it focus closer, etc. A more accurate term would be wide/teleconverters or macro diopters.

Anytime you add extra glass in front of the lens, it degrades the image, so those accesory 'lenses' more or less suck. Real interchangeable lenses are the only thing that goes in front of the sensor or film, you take the one that's on there off and put the other on.

It's OK to use those with video cameras because there's not much resolution to begin with (HD is less than 2 megapixels, and mini DV is well under 1), but with still cameras it's not really worth it...
