Wheeler Bikes
Hopefully some of you have heard of this brand and can shed some light on it for me. I can't find any info on the web other than it appears the name was bought out at some point.
I went to our local bike co-op last night and saw this bike. Had to have it... bought it. I paid $120 for it because its crazy clean. Is it worth it... I don't know, but I feel I got a fair shake and helped the co-op regardless.
This bike appears to have been sitting in a basement for the last 20 years. Its spotless. I am having trouble loading all the pics of components, but for now, here are the specs and a full bike shot.
The bike: Wheeler Crossline 3000
Frame: Cr-Mo (front and rear rack mounts)
Tires: 700c x 42c (Wheeler brand, still with new tire tabs on tread)
Wheels: 700c - 36 spoke
Gears: 3/7
Flatbar and grips (Wheeler brand)
All components match: Shimano Altus C10 shifters, Altus C10 derailures, Altus C10 crank, Altus C10 brake levers
It rides incredible, shifts smooth and is very light and quick.
Anyway, I am pleased with it and will give it to my son. Any info you have would be appreciated though.

Can't say much about older models, but wheeler is a popular high end brand in Korea. A lot of them are Titanium now. The bikes seem to be on the high end of the scale. Perhaps its the same company? If so then what you have certainly wasn't bottom of the barrel.

$120 is right about maxed out for the condition and the parts- that being said, you'd be hard pressed to buy anything new for that amount that would come close.
The parts are often found right in that grey area at the lower end of the market- right at the zenith of department stores and right at the floor of full fledged bike shops. With that in mind, "wheeler" bikes could be just about anybody, and you're probably not going to find much about the brand. I would imagine the frame is tig welded steel, most likely made in the same factory as lower end big name bicycles- trek, giant, specialized... In short, it's a good, but not great, bicycle.
You shouldn't have much trouble getting years of service out of this bike, just ride it.

I had a Wheeler go through my hands - it was a very odd bird. Relatively heavy (probably straight gauge cro-mo - maybe even with hi ten stays), blahhh workmanship...but some flourishes, like internal routing, panto, and chromed fork that you wouldn't expect. If memory serves, I found that it was a German distributor of Asian manufacture, but I don't remember for sure.

Interesting. I have been sort of eyeing a few Wheeler frames on the bay to replace the Sport SX.

Look like a fine hybrid to me. 36 spoke wheels, shraeder valves, and 3x7 geariing dates it...I would say not later that the mid-90's. You 20 year estimate may be spot on.
Given its obvious condition (excellent), $120 would be a solid buy. Straight gauge chromo tubes would not be a negative for me as it provides a very stiff and basically unbreakable bike that is only a fraction of a pound more than a more costly butted frame.
If you decide not to keep it, let folks know here!

Hi there,
I've got almost the same bike, a Wheeler 3000 Cross Line, but with Shimano Exage 300 LX group (maybe older end 80's, start 90's). The frame is Tange MTB Cr-Mo P.G. and the fork Tange MTB Cro-Moly "Response Fork".
The brand seems to be from Switzerland, still alive. I didn't find any informations about those (our) bikes so far but I still try to.
Let's keep in touch.

just bought a wheeler 8800 with full xt group. It should be in decent shape and it's coming here next week. About 1991 with Tange Prestige tubing. Can't wait!
Anyone else got an 8800? Wondering if the stem is 1" or 1 1/8. I know it's quill from the photos.

Appears to have the same Shimano components as an early to mid 1990's Trek 700 Multi Track Hybrid, which would position it as a nice value level bicycle. The frame should last forever if not abused!
Enjoy!

Hey BG -
Assuming you did not take the Wheeler bait (long ago) - wondering what drew your Eye? if you can remember.
