Trek 560 - Craigslist Madison

I've been looking around for a decent road bike to get me into long distance biking. I'm a graduate student and hence I have to be miserly .
I found a decent looking 1988 Trek 560 for $350 on craigslist. I've not been able to get any information from the owners wife about the bike's general condition and I'll be going over the weekend to check it out.

The bikes posting - "https://madison.craigslist.org/bik/4479438197.html"
I think it has the Shimano 105 groupset on.

Other than the shifting, what else should I be watching for when I test the bike out?

I think that $350 is a little high for a bike from the 80s. I'm hoping that it's been well maintained and tuned!! What do you folks think about it?

Cheers

When someone can't identify the frame size I assume the bike needs some work. General condition looks good. I would say $250 max for that bike.

I recently bought the one below and saved on the shipping. I like it a lot, but then again, I have a few Treks; 360, 520, 520 Cirrus, 620, 2300 Carbon, Pilot 2.1, 2 Multi-Tracks, and 2 MTBs. Not all in the same location.

Vintage 1985 Trek 560 Road Racing Bicycle | eBay

I think I bought below market, but $250-$275 seems right for a 105 groupset bike.

Looks like a 60cm? I have a 1988 560, one of my favorite rides. That one looks like based on head lug it may be a late 87 produced but sold in 1988, many 88 560 were built with true temper vs 531. But that one may be 531 based on lug.

What to look for? Check the wheels out. Make sure they spin reasonably true with no hops or flat spots. Nothing worse than riding a bike with flat spots. Check the frame for dents or cracks. If a bike you look at does not shift right that could be a bonus for you as you can talk down the price and it is usually an easy fix. Most of the time its just not maintained very well. Just a bit of cleaning and adjusting. Look at the brake and shifting cables. If they are corroded and dark they have not been changed in years. Things to point out to drive the price down.

Frame looks like a 62 cm. $250 bike max. Seat is all the way down, so check to see if it's stuck. I hope they teach you how to add hyperlinks before you graduate.

Too much for the Madison market. That bike will need bar tape, new cables and housing, all the bearings regreased, and probably tires. Cosmetic condition appears good though. I wouldn't pay more than $250 considering the work it needs. And I do all my own work.

+1 There's a decent chance the seatpost it stuck, I would be worried. Check the stem too of course.
