$350 for a 1999 trek 2100?
Hi,
I'm looking to get started in cycling and found a 1999 trek 2100 for $350. Is this a good deal? I'm not sure how many miles it has on it but i plan on asking. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

All depends on the condition. A mint 11 year old Trek 2100 with few miles might be worth it. A used bike that required $100-$200 or more in repairs wouldn't be worth it because you could do better with a much newer bike.
One of my first bikes was a 2100 and it was decent but it sure wasn't a collectors frame.

There's always different ways to look at a bike. First of all no matter how good of a deal you get some one else got (and will be happy to tell you) that they got a better deal. That's just the way it is. Remember the bike that you can buy now has advantages over the "better deal" that's off in the future.
Lots of people started buying Treks after Armstrong started having success so there's lots of them out there. Some got alot of miles, some spent most of their lives in a garage. Where does the one you're looking at fall into this range? Check it out.
If you get a clean quality bike (and the Trek certainly qualifies as a quality bike) for $350 you got a deal that's pretty hard to beat. Bring cash and offer 275$, then 300$. The worst that happens is you pay the 350$ or decide to walk away.
But, you'll get told that you could have done better.

Check it out in person. $350 is a good price for the bike, if it's in decent condition. One thing to check is the sides of the head tube. If there are patches where the cables have worn away paint, then it's seen some miles. It's a problem I've noticed on Treks, and it's generally the first thing to show wear, so it serves a useful purpose of letting you know whether the bike has lived in a garage or not. So, if there are worn patches, more inspection is required, if there are not, I'd say it's a safe bet that it's in good shape.

FWIW, I recently sold my 1994 Trek 2120 (triple-crank version of the 2100) for $250. I gave it a top-to-bottom cleaning and it hand brand-new BB, cables, and chain. It was mechanically perfect, but there were quite a few nicks in the paint. A 1999 2100 might be worth a tad more; it's a decent bike but nothing special.
