Sugino GT Triple Crankset

For sale is this Sugino GT Triple Crankset, 52-44-38, 170 crank arms, 110 BCD, square taper, made in Japan, 1982. Original dust covers included. Its in very good condition, hardly any visible wear on the chainrings. There is some shoe rub on the crankarms but other than that, cosmetically very nice. Its pretty clean but could use a tear down and thorough cleaning. This would make a nice addition to a classic touring bike.

$30, plus shipping, CONUS only, Paypal only. SOLD

Does that use the same 110 BCD bolt holes for all three rings? These are great cranks.

Hi Scott! Yes, the 110 BCD bolts connect all three rings. I agree on your assessment, this is a really high quality crankset and its surprisingly light. I think if it was polished out it would be stunning.

And... it ships in this cool box that my Sugino XD600 came in!

Argh, someone buy it before I succumb! They make great C&V compact doubles, too.

Do you know what size spindle it takes? Nice crankset.

That's what I want to know too. I already have one of these laying idle, just need a spindle and a bike to put it on.

Sugino specified a 3U (32-52-40.5) spindle for the GT when used as a triple (see "TGT"): https://www.equusbicycle.com/bike/sug...hure56%201.pdf

I used a 3A/3K (32-52-33.5) spindle with mine when running it on a fixed-gear, so I'd use something in between those two for a double.

You are correct Scott, the spindle size for this crankset is 3U. I still have the original BB that was matched to the crankset on my 1982 Nishiki Cresta when I purchased the bike new and the spindle is stamped 3U, and E210, one of the cups is stamped Kawamura Japan.

The dimensions of the spindle are D Length Overall: 127.0, A Length Left End: 35.0, B Length Middle: 52.0, C Length Right End: 40.0. Note these dimensions are slightly different than those on Sheldon Browns chart. Unfortunately the races on the spindle and cups are slightly damaged as well as the bearings but I'll include the original BB in the deal if someone wants it.

And for Shimano's cartridge-bearing BBs, I'd expect the 122mm unit to work fine for doubles, and am reasonably optimistic that the 127mm would work for triples. If using a lipless NDS cup, one could also use 1-2mm of BB spacers on the drive-side to simulate the original asymmetrical spindle, which would all but guarantee the latter application works.
