83 expedition?
I'm almost certain that this is an 83 Expedition that I pulled in for $100.
It's a mash of parts--I think the DT shifters might be original, as well as the crankset, but the FD and RD don't match, and I don't think the bike shipped 700C. Though it is nice to see that the BR-MC70 reaches okay--I know people have a hard time converting these machines to 700c.
So, needs work, but I think it is still a score. Too big for me at 58cm so will transfer the parts I want to the 56cm frame (also 1983) I already own and then sell the frame on.

I think Expeditions are so outrageously cool.
They have all the "bells and whistles" in terms of braze ons and features, I think that "battleship gray" Jeep color is totally the business. If I'm not mistaken, they were also outfitted with the best components available. That Mountech front derailleur and the Sugino AT crankset are THE best ever.
Plus they're also pretty rare- so that gets added into the cool factor cachet.
As an aside- I have an 84 Stumpjumper Sport- it's the same color. For whatever reason, I see Expeditions, Sequoias and Stumpjumpers in that color- and I subconsciously think that they're heavy as a tank. Of course, that's totally off base, but it's just the way I associate it. I think I've read that the Expeditions were made of the high grade Ishiwata tubing- just an all around great bike.

"Mountech front derailleur" can you tell me more about the FD? i had no idea!
the shimano RD is ****, i'm pretty sure. it's heavy and rusting, which can't be a good sign!
EDIT: the RD is an rd l541. some sport replacement for whatever was on there originally, i'm sure.

The Mountech is great for a lot of reasons. It's a good looking unit. The limit screws are in a good place. It's capable of using a cable stop, if you need it. It's got a great amount of traverse available- it can go out far and come in really close. It's right around the same weight as a Superbe Pro FD and much lighter than Deore XT or Suntour XC Pro FDs. It's wide enough between the cages that you don't need to trim all the time, but narrow enough to do its job. It can pick up the chain from a 26 and still go out to a reasonably small cog without rubbing on the trail end of the cage (I consciously don't go to a 'small-small' combo). It can handle at least a 52T big ring.
Now the Mountech rear derailleur is a different story. Although there's two versions of the Mountech RD- the first (with the font style like on your FD) is the dog- and may have come on your bike and died- hence the Light Action RD) The second version with the black stripe is pretty decent.
The word "Mountech" has become synonymous with failure because of the historical problems of the RD. But the Mountech FD is a near perfect synthesis of "business" and beauty.

no kidding--thanks for all that. too bad the RD is no good!
it cleaned up pretty nice, i think. it's certainly in better shape than my 56cm of the same year.
