If I recall correctly the timeline was compiled from observations of various members of CR list based on bikes of known provenance.
if you search the CR archives there's a lot of threads on Colnago timeline.

Better do it soon…
Alex has advised that he is going to discontinue hosting the archives.
Last I read he is looking for someone to transfer the frame builder's data, and he indicated someone is attempting to translate the CR data, possibly only for the CR google group use.
Nothing digital lasts forever.

Thanks Marty. I've been to the CR archives but I have never spent any time there. I always imagined that the Colnago research happened that way but it's good to know that.

Thanks repechage for your insight into the CL data - sad but very informative (as usual).

That generates a question, as I'm familiar with some frames that were all chromed (but not polished) for corrosion protection, then painted.
In fact, I tend to like those. (Centurion Semi Pro, Centurion Turbo, some Basso's, some Cinellis...)
Not possible in this case? Any idea what years it would be, or just not with Colnagos?

Of course, who knows the maximum bid of the winner, it might have taken quite a bit more to prevail, the roulette wheel of eBay auctions. I thought about a snipe, but I have plenty of projects and would have preferred a cm or two smaller. The other curiosity was the image hosting was from a .pl site... It did not match the seller 's location, as it was offshore I had my guard up, might have been nothing to worry about.

If you look at this bike's images closely you will see where the bare metal was exposed was a layer of rust, not too bad, but rust. On the fork, where the paint was missing was bright. A fork with a chromed crown typically is dipped dropouts first, so having chrome dropout faces is straightforward and typical. Bikes with painted blades often do not get fully polished, so while the chrome covers all, it will not be a class A surface. Also, many bikes with chrome crowns have the underside of the crown is painted, obtaining good chrome coverage under a fork crown requires extra anodes to get the chrome to deposit there.

Hi Confente, thanks for the background information regarding the Colnago timeline - data collection was just as I imagined which gives me a secure feeling that this information is well collected and researched. I've often referred to this timeline when a Colnago has taken my fancy. It must have been quite rewarding to be part of the team that put the timeline together.

I hope this database expands to other Colnago models of the next generation.
