Is it truly worth the effort...

...to garbage pick and drag home this clapped out POS Favorit rust bucket just to reef off the clamp-on Suntour ratcheting shifters? It was so corroded that nothing budged except the shifters and the forks. The cool girder stem was slammed down hard but what the heck, I loosened the nut and voila,it was fully lubed and slipped right out. The levers are cool looking as well. I prised one QR from a wheel just cuz I could. This is kinda pathetic behaviour but I like it anyway.
Now to get the stem and bars free from the steel shim.

I suspect lots of folks on this forum would have done the same.

Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...

Does it have the cool / ugly leather saddle? And the knockoff Racer brakes? There's something about those Favorit bikes, no originality but I like the stylish imitations of other stuff...

Hah! I can relate. A couple of weeks ago on trash night, I saw that someone down the street had put out three bicycle frames and a barrel full of forks, fenders, and bars, among other steel bits. I grabbed the frames, four forks (hoping that they'd match the frames), and two sets of fenders. I've fiddled with the frames a bit: one seems relatively well made and needed a stuck seat post and buggered crank arm removed (which I did), and it's my size. Another is a small Motobecane of some sort, and a third is a Univega Nuovo Sport that someone started to strip the paint from and then stopped:

I really didn't need the projects, but, then again, winter will be here soon.

YOu shoulda seen the Raleigh I brought home last month. Not even a Notingham. I think I can use a part or two off of it.

That's the bike...literally everything branded Favorit but the brakes/crank/hub are way too far gone to salvage. Glad I'm not alone in my obsessions. The Usual Suspects are responding here

That feeling when you envy other posters, 'cause their neighborhoods have cooler trash. Of course, in this university town there's a mini deluge just before Christmas break, and major picking opportunities at the end of the academic year and when leases expire in August.

A friend of mine commutes on a Favorit. He's sad that he can't keep it original every time a component wears out, but keeping it original would be very expensive.
