I’d like to hold my personal collection at around 15: it’s a nice-sized collection that allows for a lot of variety, yet it’s small enough that I can ride all of them, pay for upkeep, and have space to store them. Anything new is going to mean that something either goes to the boys or gets sold. Living in Mexico means that there are relatively few nice old bikes for sale, so that keeps a lid on the temptations, for the most part.

Which one? I've noted your Mondia and one other on the Seattle CL. If that Mondia was a little smaller....

heh. fortunately, i sold the heaviest bike in the fleet, the fuji s10-s. it was rather pretty, though.

the guy was a wa huskies fan, and had to have a purple bike.

they won at so cal the night before in quite a shocker, so he celebrated with his first road bike.

love putting adults on their first ever road bike ... even if it's hi-ten!

dd ... i had to split up my one craigs ad of multiple bikes, 'cause it kept getting flagged for removal.

i don't really get it, but it's all good now with individual ads. i opened an account to significantly help with their management.

HA! I have the same situation, I was talking about selling a bike and Lisa asked me how much I'd get, I thought a few hundred. She said it's not worth it, just keep the bike and ride it. And I did and do.

I don't hold a candle to this crowd, there are 13 bikes at my house right now:
Mine - 6
Lisa's - 4
The kid's - 2 (plus one at her apartment)
The kid's boyfriend's - 1 (plus one at his apartment)

The nice part, all bikes are ready to ride right now and all of them are seeing miles.

Two for me.

And one each for my wife and kids.

That's five, and I can barely walk around in my garage without tripping over someone's bike.

As a guitarist, I've read this same thread many times on guitar forums. Just substitute "guitar" or "amp"/"amplifier" for "bike" and it's the same discussion.

Wow- some of you make me feel good and not nutz after all. In truth, I really don't know the exact amount and prefer to keep in that way. Quite a few kids bikes that I don't count. I suppose would catagorize those with the folders, 3 speeds, a tag along, a few trailers as clutter. Yet with enough parts to make complete I also don't count other lightweight and ATB frames.

Then there's the better stuff (at least in my eyes, higher value) and what I actually ride. Surely feel guilty if a bike in the rotation doesn't get ridden, otherwise its not worth having. And I don't mean just a ride around the block either, it has to get some decent miles in. Sadly, our tandem is one of my faves but falling in the other category. I'm hanging on to it long as possible hoping the youngsters will soon be ready for it. That said, current number is 7 1/2. That number will change this Autumn / Winter.

In addition to another tribute lightweight racer for one the girls, I'm building two for myself. Neither being wall art but pretty cool rides. An 80's/90's Italian hotrod and a very early cyclocross. Raw riders that I won't cry if they get scratched but good enough for the party. Hope thats my limit and rather prefer to focus on rides and or events. After that, who knows but might part with one or two, only to justify something 1930's- early 50's lightweight of special interest.

A tandem for both of us.

We each have a modern mountain bike and a Surly LHT.

I have six C&V road bike that currently riders, with a similar number in various states of project, plus a 2007 LeMond Poprad en route.

She has two C&V road bikes, one modern steel road bike, and two projects.

And each recent college grad has a C&V road bike here at the house.

So ~25 as of today. 15 rideable.

4 road bikes being ridden. 6 more resting. A couple road frames, 3 hybrids, 2 mtn bikes, 2 kids bikes, dresser full of parts .... probably forgot some.

Oh you better believe it. In the 12 years I've been married to my wife, we've been under heavy renovation for most of them. Now we have two homes, and they're both under renovation. I'm very tired.

There are ten bikes in the garage. My fiancée thinks it's too many, but each of 'em does fill a niche ...or at least that's what I tell myself. The only intact bike that's truly redundant is the old Peugeot, but it's sticking around just because I like that thing. (And because without it, I may lose eligibility for C&V membership!)

My road bike.
My backup / bad weather / hill climbing road bike (it has a triple).
My cyclocross bike that gets 'all-rounder' duty: trails, riding with kids, hauling stuff in panniers.
My Peugeot UO-8.

In use by the fiancée:
My (her) mountain bike.

My older daughter's:
The 24" wheeled mountain bike she's about to outgrow.
The 26" wheeled mountain bike that's replacing the 24" bike.
Her road bike.

My younger daughter's:
Her banana seat bike. That's how she rolls.

Projects:
Touring bike, in pieces awaiting restoration & rebuild.

25(ish) and too many are boxed and stored so I don't get to fondle them or anything! Many in the "stash" are just oddball old Canadian bikes, not typical collectibles. I like 'em not just because they were inexpensive.
There's about 7 in the current riding stable but that will increase with the first snow.
