Saw the Talking Heads live in the Bay Area during their "Stop Making Sense" tour- it was an absolutely crazy good concert. David Byrne ran nonstop for the full 2 hour length of the show. Best concert I've ever seen!

BigChief 10-23-15 07:09 AM

Looks like folks here don't think vintage music has stopped making sense either.

<<
I think C&V saddles make zero sense in that enlightened context. I think Brooks, Ideale, and Selle Anatomica saddles have to be shelved with a notion that they are neither healthy nor beneficial for the cyclist, beautiful or not.>>

I think I see what is happening here. You are trying to get us to dump our Brooks saddles so you can snap them all up at a cheap price and corner the market.

I love my Brooks Imperials. It was the first saddle that did not make me go numb or cause prostate irritation. The length and eloquence of your post does not give it credibility with me.

True.

Contenders:

Rock of Ages / The Band
Live at Leeds / The Who
Live at the Marquee / the Rolling Stones (Ok not an album per se but fully accessible on Youtube)
SMS is not a real live album in this vein. It's good but not the same thing.

One thing is certain - this thread sparked a discussion.

+1. I played there about5or 6 times. Always fun.

No - old music with tube amps and archaic instruments is nice for retro-chic but those things are less efficient for delivering sound to the ear than modern digital equipment. Besides, the auto tuner is very important for making sure that everything is on key. Modernization or death my friends!

I do not understand the love affair with live at Leeds. The who wrote some good music (and some incredible ****e), but they are the weakest of the big 4 by a wide margin.

Any list of live albums that doesn't include Folsom prison and live at Bhudakhan is flawed.

Little Feat. Waiting for Columbus
MY favorite live album. FWIW,
which aint much.

To declare something is "the Best", especially when it comes to music, is ridiculous. IMO.

I've had friends that have played there- I've never been there, but I've played plenty of ****ty bars with backed up toilets.

I was in a band- we played some shows in LA- OF COURSE I wanted to play at the Whiskey- but at some point you realize that place isn't "The Whiskey..." anymore. It's a place that charges bands $400 or so for the privilege of saying "we played at the Whiskey."

What I thought was interesting was out of the 3 places I played in LA, one of the great centers for rock in roll in America- no "cooler" than any place in Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, Minneapolis... Sure, it's nifty to think you're playing on the same stage as *name of legendary rockstar* but, realistically- it's *A*stage at *A* bar.

Definitely a Wire, Magazine and Buzzcocks kind of night.

Maybe I'll start with 154 or Chairs Missing. :)

Great choices! I get on these kicks where I need to hear "Map Ref 41N 93W" over and over. :)

The mention of "Live at Leeds" and "Folsom Prison", after the discussion of cover recordings, brings up a neat convergence: live recordings often have great covers. Otis doing "Satisfaction, " Who doing "Summertime Blues", Johnny and June singing "darling Companion" and the list could go on and on.

Is there an Ike and Tina live album with "Proud Mary" on it? Man, they took that song beyond the outer limits.

I'm not a player but back in the day I saw some of best music, often just getting attention, at the long gone Keystone Palo Alto (think Los Lobos as an opening act for Translator or REM, who stopped mid song and told the sound guy to turn up the vocals.)

So I agree you can get great music anywhere. Luck of the draw and the booker's taste.

Another 'not by original artist but better' entry: UB40 + Chrissy Hynde, I Got You Babe.

Live album contender: Miles Davis, In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete.

Live album picks-

Nighthawks at the Dinner

Between the Breaks...Live.

Some touring musicians on here now? Sweet! I give you people credit. That looks like fun, but hard work. Any of you ever play at a place in Norfolk, VA named "Bessie's Boathouse" or simply "The Boathouse?" That was by far, the best venue for live music that I ever been to. Gone now but not forgotten.

This thread has stopped making sense.

You know you can save 30 seconds on an 8-minute song with your amp set to 11 by using a lightweight carbon fiber guitar neck, don't you?

Digital equipment has it's good and bad points. A small tablet takes up a lot less room on a tiny stage than a analog mixer and digital FOH processing is cheaper, smaller and easier to set up than those old fashioned effects racks. And guitarists that use tons of effects can save time and stage space using digital amps and ditching those massive pedal boards. But plenty of the old fashioned gear, like tube guitar amps, are just as viable now as ever. I'm happier with a Princeton Reverb behind me and a Sure 58 mic in front of me than I am with any of the modern equipment I've tried so far.

RobbieTunes 10-23-15 02:19 PM

I, for one, have staggered out of Bessie's, somewhat stuporous and ears ringing from Robbin Thompson up close and personal, or Jimmy Thackery's night hawkin'. I think during one occurrence I encountered Norfolk's finest, who, after inquiring and determining I was visiting from Little Creek, pointed me in that direction and said "don't drive."

I'm gettin' old, I think. Today's playlist:
Bill Withers
Richard Thompson
Dianne Warren
Ry Cooder
and an offbeat CD of The Animals, with "Paint it Black" and somewhat "spoken" versions of their most recognized songs that you'll never hear on the radio or Pandora.

Jeepers. Now I'm in the mood for some NRBQ, or David Lindley and El Rayo X.

Yep, ticked me off when they split the LP up for the CD version.

Bangles, Hazy Shade of Winter
Blondie, hanging on the telephone
john Cale, Hallelujah
Johnny Cash/Joe Strummer, redemption song
Warren Zevon, back in the high life

Egad, I have all of those.

I sent my son the movie Streets of Fire (Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Michael Pare, Virginia Madsen, Rick Moranis).
He said his college friends were glued to the screen. Finally, one said "Oh, it's like a comic book."
