If I remember correctly, another reason these were pulled from the market was that the balls would eventually weaken and shatter. This resulted in sharp plastic shrapnel flying all over including into the face of the user and who ever was standing close. These things were just a bad idea all the way around. Fun though.

Couldn't they have been made out of a better material? Steel should be safe though expensive, and it wouldn't have the appealing sound.

... the reason, from my experience, could be summed up in a single word, "MOMS". (And we called them clackers. I was told that the idea came from the Argentina gaucho bolas balls.)

Your Pletscher rack slowly sliding down the seat stays, taking the paint with it. How many boom era bikes do you find with those two distinct paint scrapes on the seat stays?

I've never had that problem with the Pletscher rack on my Fuji - it has been on there since the '70s, too. That's because I invested all of a whopping $1.50 on the sheet metal support bracket from Bike Warehouse that is supported by the brake bolt. The two bolts for the Pletscher mount go through the appropriate holes - depending on frame size, etc - at the top of the support bracket.

and yes, the tire savers have been on there since the '70s, too!

I totally forgot about those! When my brother got his first "race" bike (a vintage Raleigh), the seller made sure to include the most important accessory.
