"New" Miyata!
Today I upgraded from an '84 Miyata 310 to an '85 Miyata 710! From double butted to triple butted frame, from 27" to 700c rims, from 1024 forks to "mangalite", plus all the components etc. the Cyclone shifts a lot nice than the Golden Arrow stuff.
All in all I'm pretty thrilled. Now what to do with the 310? Make it a Fredded out grocery getter? Craig's list it? It used to be my sporty ride, and compared to my Shogun hybrid it still is, but this 710 is very nice. : )

Pictures, or it didn't happen. I also have a Miyata 710...a very nice bike. It's my main commute ride.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.
All things being equal, I'd ditch the 310. I have an awful hard time putting my money where my moth is on that, though.

There we go, a solo shot and with its little brother. You'll notice the 710 is also in a faster color. ; )

I like having a rain bike. It's really more like a fowl weather bike with a rack and trunk-bag for an extra sweater/jacket. And it is the bike I don't worry as much about road salt hurting the bikes finish.

Congrats! I stepped up from my beloved old '75 Fuji S-10S to a '84 Miyata-built Univega Viva Sport a few years ago. The Viva Sport fell somewhere between the 310 and 710 (and I upgraded that bike even closer to 710-specs). Last December I stepped up a bit further to a '86 Miyata 710. Big difference. Not so much in weight, but a lot different in feel. I'm not sure if I can justify stepping up to a 912 or Team. But I'll keep my options open if one should fall into my lap...
Put fenders on your 310 for a 'rain bike'.
Gratuitous pic of my 710:

I had a couple of 710s, nice bikes. Your 310 is not the same as my 312, but if you get rid of it you'll kick yourself, just saying. It will make a great commuter.

Yeah I'm thinking I'm going to keep the 310. I'll put all the luggage rack and panniers on that bike, keep the 710 light and nimble. With the rack and fenders moved from the hybrid to the 310 I can then set up the hybrid to be more trail worthy. Sell a bike, what was I thinking...
It it stops at three bikes... Right guys?

NOW what did you do?
Spline CrMo fork is higher-end than your '85 710... Dang, are you gonna make us play detective here??? I'm guessing an '86 912.

You might want to keep fenders on the hybrid for wet crushed-stone or muddy rail-trails. Only my 'go-fast' bike(s) are going to be fenderless. One here in OH (the Univega Viva Sport) and the Miyata 710 in AZ.

...not sure if that pink came on other models/years though.

'86 912 came with a Splined CrMo fork, as well as the frame being Spline Triple-Butted. My '86 710 is 'regular Triple-butted frame and a plain CrMo fork.

So for those keeping track at home my... Geeze, it's now a collection... Contains an '84 310, an '85 710, and an '86 912.
I dropped 2 bills on this barn fresh example needing tubes, tires, seat, AND while being stored in the basement of the PO house someone liberated the toe clips (but left the straps?) and the brake pads.
So the 310 was a free shed bike from a friend, and needed 140.00 in stuff to get it where I wanted it.
The 710 was 180.00 and "needs" nothing but could use tape, pads, and a seat.
and this was just purchased by me today in Chicago (I'm visiting here from Boston) asking 250.00 and we agreed at 200.00.
I'm a trained motorcycle tech, so I've re-packed bearings etc, so I'm not paying for anything but parts.
I think I'm doing pretty well, I may have overpaid a tiny bit for the 912 considering condition but I think it's fair. Especially in Chicago.

Anything I should know about the Bio-pace crank?

Well, on your way back - if you're not flying - you'll likely pass within five miles of me (Ohio Turnpike). How 'bout a trade? I am just putting the finishing touches on my '84 Univega Viva Sport...

Oh now you've gotten into the good stuff! I loved my '87 912 and was happy when it was passed onto a friend so I could keep an eye on it. The ride on the triple butted Spline frame is very similar to the ride on my Columbus SLX framed Serotta. Your starting a nice collectin but beware of the N+1 disease!

Nope, I'm flying. And I'm sticking with the Miyata's for now, I think I'd like to at least ride this one once! : )
oh! And I just got back from the LBS and they said that that's a scrape, not compression damage, so it's cosmetic not structural. Phew!
I should have have this up and rideable tonight, I'll keep you posted!

Around 86 and 87 some small differences appear. Other years might have slight dofferences too, not sure.
Anyways, the Canadian market '86 912 had non-aero levers. The markets got different levels of 600 for a year or two.
The miyatacatalogs website are the Canadian catalogs.

Congratulations on your Miyata series. My daughter's '85 310 seems to have nearly as nice a frame as the '79 912 that I've had since new, and still ride often (60 miles in the last two days) in its upgraded 8-spd Ergo-shift form as my dedicated fender bike.
I'm curious about the seat post diameter on later 912's. What is it on your '86? (Any other 912 owners, feel free to chime in.)
My '79 uses a 26.8mm seatpost, which are impossible to find with lots of setback.
