Probably because I am anchored to the fact that I have never found a more original bike, and I want to keep it as legit as possible. But you are right - the right component would look just as good, and would FUNCTION better (this being the brakes for the wife's bike - this is kind of a big deal).

Saw a thread suggesting the same thing earlier - so I guess I will qualify my ISO to say that I would also consider MAFAC Ville Forge Ref 725 or something else that would look fitting on this bike.

that's a tough find, seriously. i've seen one mixte in the last 5-6 years with the ball-end still intact. i've gotten to the point i just round out the ends at the same spot to make them look 'natural' and move on.

I've sanded a 25.4mm out with emery cloth taped on a large drill bit wrapped to the appropriate diameter until the bars slid in smoothly before. Still riding that stem more than 5 years later daily without issue.

I wonder if the Tektro alloy lever blades could retro-fit to the MAFAC bodies and if so if the cable-pull would be about the same. That's what I might try, assuming the bodies are alloy and in good shape. Friends of mine have the Tektro (complete) levers in that 'skeleton' style and have had no complaints (except they cost more than they "should").

Have plenty of good stuff to trade but, that said, I certainly don't want to break up anyone's correct set. I found the one by picking through the bins at the LBS. If there is another source for this I would certainly order one, but I've looked and everything seems to come with pads or brakes.

I recently purchased a Centurion Pro-Tour and in the pics I have it only has 1 top tube cable clamp. I need the diameter of the top tube, and what might have been OEM for the clips, and a good cheap source of some replacements.

I have a 5 speed Helicomatic freewheel if that is any help. The large cog is a 28. It will need some cleaning.

ISO the lower clamp mechanism to a modern Kalloy 2-bolt style seatpost (I think the manufacturer designates it as an SP-369). I don't need the whole post, just the lower half of the clamp--the one I have came to me without it.


Also, I would like to trade a pair of Christophe Special toe clips in exchange for a similar pair in a larger size. The ones I have are I guess what I would call a medium--they measure about 2 3/8" from the deepest part of the clip back to the flange that bolts to the pedal. I need a pair with a depth of 3", or close to it (I know, I can shim them out a little bit if necessary).


The pair I have is in good but well-used condition, with the usual few flecks of rust. A quick soak in Evaporust would clean them right up, I think. They have what seems to be the original mounting hardware.


I'd prefer a larger pair of Christophes, since these are for a French bike, but I'd consider MKS clips if that's what's out there.


I have various items of value to the like-minded.

@jonwvara, is that a TdF or SC per chance? I was just about to post a thread about a bare frame I just picked up for an ID.

I think I can help you out on the toe clips, let me hit the basement. Do they absolutely need to be specials?

It's a TdF frame--nicely patinaed. The TdF I bought in 1971 was always a little small for me, so when I found this frame I moved the parts over (or rather am in the process of doing so). That leaves me with an incorrectly painted and decaled 61 cm TdF frame that I'll eventually get around to putting on the "the frame doesn't fit" thread.


I'm not really particular about the clips, although I'd prefer something French if possible. Getting them big enough is the main thing. As long as they're chromed steel I'm happy--I can't stand plastic clips.

Well, I have some great news for you, @jonwvara.

This was sitting on top of the pile in my pedal bin. Both pairs marked L underneath, so I guess it's unmistakable what size they are.

Actually found a 6sp freewheel w/ good cogs @ my local shop. Would still be interested in a super clean 6sp if it were ~13-24, but otherwise I think I'm set on that. Thanks!!!

I always thought the ones labeled special were the large ones. The next size up would be the Special X which I'd consider XL.

I had not heard that, but it wouldn't surprise me. It would be consistent with the general tendency of the French to make things as confusing as possible. I mean, why just stamp a size on a set of toe clips when you can conceal it within the name?


Francophile's Christophe Specials (see post #270) are clearly stamped with a capital "L" on the flange. Mine (also Christophe Specials) don't have a letter marking anywhere.


One way to test the Christophe-Special-equals-large hypothesis would be to compare the dimensions of mine to francophile's. Mine measure about 63mm (3 1/2") from the deepest part of the toe to the flange that bolts to the pedal. If francophile's are the same, that would suggest that maybe "Christophe Special" does mean large, and that sometimes they stamped a letter code on there, too.


What do you say, francophile? Want to get out a ruler and post the result? Inquiring minds want to know.
