Trek 400 Upgrading Components
Currently visiting the home country of Campagnolo, so I figured I'd look for some used campy gear over here.
I have a 1985ish Trek 400. Currently has three chainrings up front with 6 or 7 gears in the back. Shimano components are on it now. Today I found a second generation Super Record Rear Derailleur that looked great, but didn't have shift levers included. I also found a nuovo record rear derailleur with shift levers included for less.
Also was thinking to switching to a double chainring setup in the front as opposed to a triple. I found a Xerox (by Campagnolo) double crankset. I'll have to check for a front derailleur.
Any pros and cons? Will they work on my bike? Worth the upgrade?
Cheers

Friction will obviously work on your bike. The shimano derailleurs in all likelihood will shift better than the campy. The campy stuff is durable and has style though. Still I'd be tempted to keep what is on the bike. The triple is useful.

Bikes: 1978 Trek TX700; 1978/79 Trek 736; 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport; 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP; 1985 Trek 620; 1985 Trek 720; 1986 Trek 400 Elance; 1987 Schwinn High Sierra; 1990 Miyata 1000LT
I have a 1986 Trek 400 Elance. This would have been Trek's 2nd from the bottom frame.
This bike has a 531 main frame with Tange CrMo fork and stays. It's also a beautiful bike- great glorious, deep paint, tasteful decals, wonderful lines and well designed with angles and appointments.
I decided to build it with components that are befitting a frame of that quality; it came with mid level Shimano Z series stuff- so I replaced the braking system with 6400 600/Ultegra levers and calipers (dual pivot in the front, single pivot in the rear). Shifting is Suntour Command shifters pulling XC Pro in the front, XC Comp in the rear- a Sugino SP-KC seatpost, Avocet Touring II saddle, Avocet triple crankset with RINO drilled rings and a Campagnolo granny. The wheels are the wheels from my 85 Trek 720- Matrix Safari rims with a Maillard 700 front hub and replaced the rear hub with a Maillard 600 sealed bearing hub.
I get a somewhat perverse kick having top of the line and second from top of the line parts on a 2nd from the bottom of the line frame!
