Cassette Removal tool

I have a sprocket removal tool which has worked on the few bike I've repaired, but this tool will not fit a Schwinn 5 speed cassette from the early 1970s. My removal tool is too large, which tool do I need?

Bikes: Still a garage full

Impossible to tell without a photo of the freewheel straight on.

This is a bit of what I know about freewheel tools. I agree with oddjob2 - a square on shot would be very helpful...

Your Schwinn has a freewheel, not a cassette. Go to a local bike shop and have them try some of their freewheel tools.

Thanks for the picture randyjawa, I have the 12 spline Park FR-1, I need either the no name splined 1 or the no name splined 2. There are 20 splines on the existing free wheel. What is the difference with those two?

NN2 and NN2 have the same spline count but #2 is not as deep as #1. Though I can't accurately measure the individual spline width or depth, they seem to be very close.

NN1 and NN2 may or may not be interchangeable, NN2 is a thin walled Zeus/Phil Wood. I believe the OP needs NN3 if its a Shimano freewheel.

It seems like I'm always missing a tool...

Top row...
Shimano, Falcon, Campy, Zeus/Atom/Normandy, Shimano

Middle row...
Suntour 6 prong, Suntour 4 prong, Suntour 2 prong deep, Suntour 2 prong shallow, Maillard 2 prong, Campy 2 prong

Bottom Row...
BMX, BMS, Cyclo 2 prong, Bicycle Research CT1/Dura Ace?/Regina ORO?, BMX, BMX

I believe the old Schwinn freewheels take an Atom remover https://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-Fre.../dp/B001B6LKXS

Would help to know if there's a brand on the freewheel. I suspect it'll be the Shimano CT-4 but that's just a WAG.

Shimano Splined Freewheel Remover (pre-1985) is a replacement for the CT-4 puller.

But seriously, original poster, a pic is worth a thousand words in this case. If not, just the information etched on the freewheel would be awesome.

I think so as well. The difference between NN1 and NN2 is wall thickness and a slight spline profile difference. NN1 which is the same as a Park FR4 is thick walled and in most instances the axle needs to be removed to use it. NN2 is a very thin walled Zeus/Phil Wood tool that's so thin it can be used with the axle in place.

NN1 is commonly known as the Atom/Regina pattern. Typical tools won't fit over the locknuts on Schwinn wheels, so be prepared to disassemble, if that's what you have.

"No-name splined #1" and "no-name splined #2" are two versions of the same remover, for Atom, Zeus, Everest, and late production Regina freewheels. #2 looks to be the Phil Wood version of that tool.

Some of the old "Schwinn Approved" freewheels used the large-diameter tool "Bicycle Research - ???" (actually Bicycle Research CT-3) in Randyjawa's picture above.

Schwinn did not use 5 speed cassettes in the early 1970s. You're looking for a freewheel remover, not a cassette remover. You need one that's appropriate for the freewheel that's on the wheel. What brand is the freewheel?
