Here's how I always try to explain what it's like to drive a Miata. In any other car you sit in it and drive. You wear a Miata like a beautifully fitting suit.
I sold mine after picking up a very low mile C5 Corvette Z06. Stupidest thing I ever did. Driving a Miata is just an experience in and of itself. It truly does tickle your soul and you find yourself just smiling.

That NC generation of Miata is one of my favorites. My friend has a robin's egg blue over dark brown leather 6-speed. Really nice looking, as was your classic black. Quick cars, too, though in my short test drive of his, a little eager for crummy Seattle area streets.
At 6'5", I'm always a touch too tall for Miatas, and that ends up being the true deal breaker. A C5 Z06 is a great car, and I'm a fan of C5s in general (you can fit a bike in the back of the long glass coupes, like you can in my Camaro). Don't know why Mazda put the NC's shifter so far to the right of the driver--my Z28's 6-speed is tucked nice and close to me, and really the ergonomics of it are well-sorted for my height (at the very least). The sound from the intake/headers/cats/loud exhaust ranges from burly-yet-friendly to apocalyptic-bent-on-revenge. The accompanying shove is great, too.

After a DUI in a company truck, a good friend of mine quit drinking cold turkey, but now he hangs out at Indian casinos every night to fill the extra time he has from not boozing.
