Holdsworth crankset question

I installed the 48/34 Holdsworth crankset I got from the UK, it looks great and shifts quite nicely. I discovered that none of my crank pullers fit it, they're too small. Anyone know what size I need for these? There's no info that I could locate on the seller's site or elsewhere. Thanks!

Hmm, that's weird. I have one of those cranksets, and it takes a standard 22mm puller.

It's not self-extracting, is it? Do the caps come right out?

looks like an 8 mm allen would pull it right out.

Yeah, I'm puzzled. I sent an inquiry to PlanetX, and tonight I'll measure the diameter.

Very possibly I don't understand what we're looking at, but it looks to me like you have an unusual crank arm fixing bolt that does away with the need for a dustcap. Like 52telecaster said, an 8 mm should take the bolt off; and then I expect you'll be able to fit the standard crank puller.

Judging by this photo that I found on Google, there is slightly oversized recess, into which the flange of the fixing bolt fits, andthe puller threads start just below that.

The problem with this theory is that according to the website, the "Cranks are sold without bolts or dustcaps." Where did you get the fixing bolts?

(edit Oh, wait... maybe this explains it:

I ordered the bolts and dustcaps along with the crankset. Oddly, they are side-specific. The drive side has a flange and the NDS doesn't. That explains the oversize recess on the drive side arm. IIRC, my standard pullers just slid al the way down to the spindle when I tried them. It was too late last night when I posted to pull out my caliper and open it up to measure, stay tuned for that.

I'm fully prepared for a "d'oh!" moment here...

I would be highly surprised if they were designed to take anything but a 22mm puller. I wonder if it's a machining tolerance issue and your cranks are just a little on the "tight" side.

Thanks all for your input. I was trying a 19mm puller. Now, I could have sworn that I also tried it with my Park 22mm but that threaded on just fine. Must have been a long day! Case closed. BTW I really like them. They shift fast and smoothly.

This arrangement of a self-pulling/built-in puller design goes back at least to 1965 when it was done by Magistroni for the Super Zenith model.

okay, that's good news.

But inquiring minds want to know: what is the 19mm crank puller for?

Great question! I don't remember ever needing one. That leads me to believe that I got it as part of a remarkable gift of tools I got just a few years back from my mentor who's now in his 80s. More about those toolkits in this post. I've emailed him to ask if he remembers. Sadly his memory is going - he remembers the past in detail but has been repeating himself to me moe and more.
