88 Epic Allez
I finally managed to complete my 88 Epic Allez, I returned it to mostly an original state. The bike had a Campagnolo groupset but retained the original Tri color wheels and brake levers. The brake levers were pretty rough but the wheels were quite nice. I had a nearly unused Tri color group sans the levers that I installed , [MENTION=385155]Brewsmith[/MENTION] sold me the 6401 dual pivot brakes which while not original are IMO superior to the original 6400 single pivots. Sadly I gave up trying to find a decent set of brake levers and used some new Tektro levers .
I also want to thank [MENTION=347071]TXsailor[/MENTION] for giving me the flat downtube adapter plates for my 6400 shifters.

Man, 6400 was quite the groupset. So beautiful, and so a product of its era with regard to aesthetics. It's why I can't stay away from it! The dual pivot calipers are very nice and very strong, as nice and lovely as the original single pivot design was. And as much as I like a full groupset, especially those dark 6400 levers the double-black of those Tektro levers looks perfect. Really works with the black carbon and wheels--gives that Allez some real visual bite. Big fan. Wish they made a 64cm version instead of topping out at 62cm! Great work!

To my knowledge there is no " correct" as far as it going around the left or right side. If I wanted to change it , its a matter of removing the seat post.... I have always felt this is a preference thing as it certainly doesn't seem to improve or worsen braking.

I appreciate the comments, those Wolber anodized rims were in almost perfect condition with very little wear on the braking surface. I honestly do not believe this bike saw a lot of riding. I would be inclined to keep it were it a steel frame, but I probably won't simply because its carbon and I am a bigger rider.
I almost decided to keep the group and sell the frame because the wheels are so nice....

That bike looks amazing and I am glad you made good use of the Chorus groupset, sorry to hear that the spring gave up on you . I had a similar problem with my 6401 RD the B spring was shot and it would not down shift properly , but I ended up purchasing a replacement because my rear derailleur was nicer cosmetically than any replacement I could find .

I am glad you went the way you did! The first gen Chorus group looks good on my Ciocc, an almost made it though the Eroica California (rear mech spring gave up, so i had to limp home the last 20 mile, all up hill or coasting, so I could keep it in a large rear cog). the group set was in very good condition, and looked almost new!

the funny thing is, I wound up riding the entire 100+ miles with a guy from Denver area that had a 1987 Colnago, with a full Chorus group set on it. I didn't see many others, and wound up side by side with him all the way. Fate I guess.
Now I have had my fill of classic and vintage riding for a while, so I will hang it up and concentrate on training on my (gasp) CF bike!
