the example in the photo does not look like it would have been original. but then am certainly no Schwinn expert!

the thread of the front hub axle is 8.0mm X 1.0

most any front wingnut of French manufacture will fit. Huret, Souva, etc.

[the bicycle's front hub is made in France by the Maillard company for Schwinn]

These wingnuts were often displayed on a card near the cash register. When a customer buys a new bike they were asked would you like wingnuts on that? They were a low cost, add-on. They do have a vintage look to them. I had wingnuts on my first 10 speed and it allowed me to remove the wheels without tools and without fancy quick release skewers.

There are a bunch on eBay. Just find a pair that you like with the thread that juvela suggested and you should be good. Since these are not Schwinn, it doesn't matter which ones you choose. At least that is my opinion.

I rode my Schwinn to school one day, Morgan State University. About 1976. Locked it to the pole in the center of the quad. Went in for my 11am class. When I came out the wheels were gone. They also took the wingnuts.

I think I still may have one around, may be in the junk jar of wing nuts. never fits anything.

That must be a bummer to have the tire stolen especially in the quad where everyone walk by.
