Mixte discovery article

Saw this earlier and knew it had to be posted here, a lady's account of finding a '70s fendered Peugeot. You'll probably spot a factual error in the text and the tale takes a weird recycling turn, but it's good to know there's a new fan out there.

Bikes: A bunch of old bikes.

I really like classic Mixte's, so I can appreciate the story. I think the new owner might have a problem the first time she tries to get it worked on at a regular bike shop. If she has a classic friendly shop, that's great, but they are becoming a rarity.

WAG - it's Carbolite 103 and not 531. But then, the whole article is an English lit class study in clichés.

AI or human, it's a low-effort article that fails to land whatever point it's trying to make.

Journalism by Googling?

Bikes: 1975 Fuji Special Road Racer

That did seem like an AI generated story. Great looking bike though.

Yes. and steel cranks, and what look like a steel front hub and steel rim. Still a good city bike, though.

And, yes, a pretty poor article. As others have noted, reads like AI.

Half of the article is about how recycling old bikes, and transporting new bikes releases C02 into the atmosphere.
I am all for the re-use of previously built goods but gee-whizz.

I got a nicer one for free (how's that for one-upsmanship?)
I was hauling home remodel trash to the transfer station (aka dump) and there on top of the pile was a sweet Peugeot mixte, classic mid-'70s UO-8 in white, pristine mint condition EXCEPT they had upgraded the wheels to alloy rims, Super Champion Mod.58 700c with new tires. The rubber mold flash hadn't worn off the center of the tire yet, which typically happens in the first ride. No sign of brake rub on the rims. Who would do such a thing and throw it away, without even trying Craigslist? That's borderline evil.

We gave it to my wife's co-worker, who a year later admitted she never once rode it. Is this bike cursed or something? We should have demanded it back.

OK I'll give the blue one at the top credit for having the original stainless fenders and generator lighting, that is dang cool. But I still think I'd rather have the Mod.58 rims. Maybe call it a tie?
But free is definitely better than $48.

I remember the day my daughter, then a teenager, gained a new appreciation for Mixte bikes. The week prior I had crashed my beloved touring bike and while waiting for a new frame I converted our townie Mixte (a delightful bike with low-gearing, porteur handlebars, and baskets for grocery shopping) into a skinny tire bike with drop bars and a proper gear range for road. I rode that bike on a few of our long outings and my daughter could not believe how the demured former-grocery-getter mixte could leave her behind in the open road.

Mixtes can have a very road geometry to them. It is amazing how many different ways they can be configured.
