Alan Aluminum Frames???
Hey all, so I found a deal on a NOS Alan Aluminum frame. Seems really nice. I did some research and evidently Alan (an Italian manufacturer) pioneered a system of gluing aluminum tubing into bracket to form the frame. I guess it didn't work out. The frame I'm looking at is welded using 7020 aluminum, which we don't see very much. Anyone have any info or experience with this sort of Alan frame? Thank you!

Check out post #114 with a link to one (welded 7020 ALU alloy) that was rebranded for Pinarello:
Re-branded ALAN frames: a list
Chances are that ALAN made them for other marques besides Pina, and their own.
I have no personal experience with them and doubt many here will, either, cause they are fairly rare (unlike the thousands of screwed-and-glued frames), but stand by and maybe somebody will chime in

I don't have experience with the Unical but this was in the catalog from 2002.

Thanks. I think one of the concerns I've run into with older aluminum frames is that I really can't be sure what the top rider weight limits may be. Case in point, I found a really nice Zullo aluminum frame, super light, hand made. I almost pulled the trigger and bought it. But after emailing Mr. Zullo himself, he replied that the frame was intended for riders who weigh no more than 143 lbs. Not 140, but 143 (so specific!) That could have been catastrophic for me, as I weigh 188-190. So, even as to this Alan frame, I probably have to give it a pass and get into a much newer product.

I once saw a Columbus catalog that specified a weight limit for SL steel tubing of 180 lbs and lower limits for their lighter tube sets. There might have been a number of other European manufacturers that had weight limits for their products, but it's likely that very few of us in the U.S. knew about them.
