My principal ride buddy and I have threatened to stop and brew up by the side of the road for many years now. Earlier this month I broke down and bought this -
I figure this, a Melitta pour-over and some filters and I would be good to go. The mini Trangia 28 would also be useful if I can ever accomplish some S24Os early next year, assuming I can score a deal on a used Hennessy hammock and perhaps most of all some TIME to do it. Right now that is my justification for rebuilding my '86 Cannondale ST400.

My blood pressure has been creeping up, and my doctor to cut back on salt and cut the coffee out. Cut back on salt, fine. Cut out the coffee? Never. And I think I don’t need to. I don’t drink that much coffee, but what I do drink is very important.
And now that I’m cycling more once again and also doing other exercise, my blood pressure has improved.

I dropped Coke maybe a decade or more ago, HFCS tastes awful. Give up coffee? Not hardly!

I stopped at ER @ 7 AM, cardiologist'd come in early that morning. Woke up in recovery room about 11:30 (awake enough during procedure to watch its progress on screen!) but don't remember the trip up to room.
It was another three days before I was released though; in on Tuesday, home Sat. AM.
I have a copy of the procedure's video recording too, if I need a reminder....

I’m fairly particular about coffee. I have at least a half-dozen brew methods, except for my espresso machine they’re all manual. Daily brew is a Hario V60 pourover and Baratza grinder. Coffee comes from local roasters, must be within 3 weeks or so of roast date. I usually get a different singe origin each week or so, my favorites are from Africa. When I travel I take beans, a hand grinder, and either an Aeropress or Melitta. I’ve had to explain myself to TSA frequently…
So yeah, coffee on the road is a tough call for me. I just discovered that a place I like to stop at whose drip coffee wasn’t up to spec makes a really good iced Americano, so that’s a game changer.

Bear with me because I can't find the story or remember the cyclists name.
As this story goes , sometime in the early seventies or maybe early sixties, coffee had started to be used as a drug for performance. And this particular cyclist had a new teammate who was using it. The new teammate offered our hero some. He said "OK " When asked how much he wanted and because he had zero experience of it and not wanting to appear foolish he said " give me three" as if he was a regular user. These where enemas and very strong. He took all of them.
Anyway a few miles up the road in the race he collapsed into the ditch in a heap, unable to continue. Heart and mind racing.
The team director came along and asked "why he wasn't on his bike" . And the dazed reply was " One day the whole world will stop turning and there will be no one to ask why".
And as it happens there was a journalist in the car who didn't know about the coffee but wrote a story about it and nicknamed him the cycling philosopher.
I haven't done justice to the story but the telling of it I heard was funny and endearing. Maybe some one here has heard it and can tell it better.

I would not even think of drinking a caffeinated beverage during a ride. The ride, itself, is stimulating enough. I have two cups in the morning and that's all. I make sure I leave a couple of hours between my coffee and the ride. I am vigilant toward and avoid the feeling of being over-stimulated. If you need coffee during a ride, your style of riding is a lot different from mine. I can't imagine needing to be awakened on a ride. As far as alcoholic beverages go, it seems, in my experience, that they are for losers.
